Just figured I would show you guys this relaxing and aquatic Brick Break clone I made, it is my first game in Flash. I uploaded it on Kongregate so you wouldn't have to make an account on my website.

My advice:

Make the shells actual boxes; otherwise the collision's a little weird.

Same for the crab.

The images seemed a little jury-rigged and large.

Other than that nice work.

They were free clipart is why, I suck at art.

I have code to detect collision for that sort of thing so I will add it to the next version, just didn't feel up to it a first really.

Thanks.

Ok. Also, add a bit of variety: 5 levels with increasing numbers of rows is bad design. Try recoloring some shells to be done in in 2 or 3 hits.

Sounds like a fine idea.

I'd say avoid mouse control with Flash. It has focus issues on certain browser + OS combinations (for example it's almost unplayable on here because Flash seems to disregard the different cursor acceleration and just screws up)

Also, don't submit your first few projects to Kongregate. You'll get a few gems that give decent feedback (I see you've already got one which offers decent advice) but the majority will be "SUX" and other useless crap. Do what you've done here: link it but self-host for feedback. Then work toward going for bigger sites like Kong.

i won the game, i noticed a glitch wit it, if you hit a shell from above, it can wipes the entire column, but still, i won

You could try so each level has different items, ie, a boat, fish, ect

Hey not bad for a first whack at it. The only thing I noticed aside from what was mentioned in your comments was that the ball sometimes gets stuck below the crab and jitters around before flying into the bottom of the screen, bouncing around until I get a game over. Making everything a box collision should make that a lot smoother though, so no biggie. Did you use the actual Flash app or pure Actionscript?

I used the actual flash app for the setup of the screen like the menu and the background and stuff, but the levels and everything was done in Actionscript 2.

That's pretty good, though it bugs out when the ball hits the side - just keeps going up and down an a glitchy kinda way... But other than that, well done

Played it, beat it. It was very simple, but for some reason I couldn't stop till I won.

Good job on your first Flash game.

It's pretty bad...

But still good for a first XD

Speaking of flash... I have no experience with it... What does one have to do to program a flash game? All I know about it is actionscript and vector graphics.

Just get Flex Builder or FlashDevelop, the Flex SDK, and have at it. You don't even need to buy Flash CS4 (the Flixel framework is all actionscript 3). Especially if you use something like Flixel, it ends up being ridiculously easy transitioning from working in DarkGDK or XNA to Flash.
