Wallpaper Release

What's a game without a promotional desktop wallpaper? Following this thought, we lately decided to design one. And to release it, of course. Here it is:

It covers the most popular screen resolutions, so we expect it to fill over 90% of the windows desktops in the world very soon

You can find the download links on our website.

Follow the breadcrumb.

August Screens

Hey everyone, take a look: Here are two new bits for you from the campaign.

As you can see, we're still working on the Mines of Gor Rugi setting. But some things have changed. Notice Seraph on the first screen? Sure you do. She will be supporting you on your way out of the mines, and you can believe us - you will need her help. We'll make sure you will

On the other image, that Security Guy behind the barrels is guarding a switch. You can conclude from that: You will need to find a switch here and there in Xarelok.
So I'll be searching switches over and over? No, don't worry! We won't send you on a world travel searching switches in confusing mazes. Xarelok is about action gameplay, and that won't change.

Consider these screens are yet work in progress. The level design still needs to be polished. Additionally, we are not satisfied with the Field of View, but we'll have another look at that later.

Cool, thanks

I'd love to upload a video... but we've discussed that in the team, and I'll have to ask you for patience in that point. We currently don't have the materials to create an interesting video (instead of some uncut 2 minute preview ).

Fighting For...

Who are you fighting for? Having countless, unkown and cruel Empire Guards on the one side and an unkown group of Rebels on the other is quite a simple setting for two sci-fi factions. Things get interesting with these concept arts: Now both of the two factions of Xarelok get their own faction logo, making each of them the One and Only instead of Who's that?

The Faction Logos

The Worrajug Empire is being represented by a robust shield of steel. It is the classic sign of a guarding faction, but without having the average triangular form that's oftenly used for conservative metal shields. This one is fresh, strong, and quite shiny. The represantitive W-letter is punched out. You never guess what it stands for...

The Rebels have more fire and wildness - they get the hot red medal of honor, fighting for the right side, with all the passion. The circle shape is very different from the square shield with round edges of the Worrajug Empire. The symbol that's punched out from the red medal is a flash of lightning, the surprising assault, the unforeseen attack of a small rebel group taking out a whole unprepared enemy base.

The Logos: In-Game

This new in-game screenshot shows a fighting Worrajug Empire Guard, obviously. Now, if you watch carefully, you will find the shape of the previously introduced logo on his armor. This makes him, finally, a true Empire Guard.

And that's it for the next weeks. Cheers.

Life Signs

It's been quite a while since our last progress report. Nevertheless, this doesn't mean we would have been lazy in-between. With this being said, let's have the latest screenshots of Xarelok speaking instead of just words:

All of these are taken from the third level of the game. It took some time to create the whole architecture of this level as it's not only larger than the two previous levels, but also much more complex. Additionally, many hours were invested into the scripting and placement of enemies, and, not to forget, the scripting for Seraph (your companion), who's yet having her little issues from time to time.

Development Notes

We hope you can see we at dhk Games are constantly advancing and improving this game, with the goal in mind that it's not only fun for us to develop it, but it will hopefully also be fun for you to play when the day comes it will be done.

Next update will be some exciting stuff about one of the main features of Xarelok that we got implemented. There is already a very small hint on one of the images. Till then, recommend us to your friends!

You know what ol' Wolfi thinks of it.

It looks very retro and minimalistic, but in its simplicity simply perfect. Awesomly designed and well structured.

This is surely a game I will play. (and I do not play everything)
And this is surely a game that will take the FPSC Engine another mile out of the swamp of prejudices

All the best

Core Feature

Xarelok will be a straight direct-to-the-action shooter. However, we could not resist to add in a little tweak that makes a huge change to the gaming experience, and which has grown to become one of the core features of Xarelok: Downloadable weapons.

Background Story

The Worrajug Empire has become the most dominant human force in a whole galaxy because of a high-tech-revolution: Weapon Servers. With the possibility to upload physical weapons to central servers, and this way, making the weapons available for download from planets spread all over the galaxy, the Worrajug scientists have created a most important military advantage for their faction. In just a few years, Worrajug became the Empire it is today, highly efficient in transporting weapons, and well equipped within literally seconds wherever needed.

Gameplay

For the gameplay of Xarelok, this means you will come across small metal Download Pads here and there. These can be controlled by accessing a nearby Weapon Download Console. Depending on your nearest gateway, you can choose from an arsenal of up to five highly different weapons to bring directly to your battlefield. Or you can choose additional body armor for a longer life. Which adds in the chance to make important strategic decisions on your way through the game, and increases the replay value.

This result of massive scriptwork is, however, not a true download feature, to make that point clear! All downloads you can access in-game are fully fictional, and do not require an internet connecion.

We hope you like this fresh idea.

Character Biography

As important as textures, models and shaders are the story elements of a game. One element of these are the game characters. For that reason, we've begun to work out sharper biographies for the characters we will be introducing in Xarelok, and we've begun with the rebel leader Colonel Nall'Ly. In addition to some basic data, we will be presenting each of our characters with even a full short story that tells how they came to Gor Rugi, why they are there, and what they are fighting for.

The sunset of Gor Rugi has always been something special for Nall'Ly. Much different than the sunset on Thal, where he was born. It was so... bright, so burning. Rage, war and peace, there seemed to be parts of all of these three at once in it. This golden scene always reminded him of who he was. And that he would not stay here. On Gor Rugi. Where he could not watch this scene too oftenly, the Guards wouldn't let him.

He thought about the times when he had a better life. Back in those days when the Worrajug Empire wasn't that strong yet. He and some companions served for the Worrajugs, and his talent for strategy and melee fights allowed him to quickly climb the coroporate ladder. Everything went fine, although he did not always follow the rules. His friends gave him cover in this point whenever needed, and could never complain about a bad connection to the girls. However, this did not help the day something went wrong...

We hope you find it entertaining, and we'd be happy about comments and critics.

In the City

If you make it out of the mines, we will lead you into the cities of Gor Rugi. These are guarded well, most of the inhabitants are not living there voluntarily. They are being forced to work in the mines for the Worrajug Empire. So it is not a surprise there is a lot of trouble around - especially when there are some rebels on the run.

The mixture of lighting, use of decals and illuminationmap shaders creates that kind of 'city mood' which differs from the rather monotone, dark mining environment. Additionally, we've covered the streets with many objects lying around to evoke a dense feeling here.

You will be able to enter buildings and houses, stop by at a gun shop, fight in the streets of the city and enter the tunnel system to clear your way below the city.

Isn't that an interesting offer from the catalog? We promise: You won't find a better travel package for Gor Rugi City. So we hope to welcome you on board soon.

Yours,

The dhk Games Travelling Agency.

I agree, although at the same time, I like the cloudy, toxic sky as well. I would mabye darker the current sky box and add one or two stars. It would look great if it was raining! xD

Rain decal + impact decal (splash) , no frame rate drop, perfect environment.

Let me know if you are interested in the rain decal.

Sure I'm interested

However, consider this map contains a lot of outdoor areas, which means you'd need tons of decals, right? I cannot imagine how decals could handle this as you do not see some rain from the inside through a window, but walk through the city streets.

Relax,I've added 100+ on a level and the framerate stays high. The only trick is to remove the sound from 95% of them and use 5-6 of them as supports, because sound distorts if you use 100 decals with the same sound effect.

Let me show you.

In the end the decal is a 1poly plane with an image with 4x4 frames.

This map takes the whole fpsc space and runs at 45fps on my crappy outdated config.

I'll give it a try. I got quite a few rain and other weather elements lingering on my hard drive

The problem is that we have quite a lot of armed characters active in an outdoor area on v. 1.15.3.

One Year Review

One full year of Xarelok development has passed, and so we feel it's time to look back and review the progress, shall we?

The work on Xarelok was started back in November 2009, with dhk Games being founded at the same time for this project. We started with nearly nothing in resources, skills and experience. However, we had great hopes and ideas for this project at hand.

First Internal (Pre-Alpha) Development Screenshot

A lot has been done on Xarelok over the past year, and you can watch the progress yourself since the game announcement on 28th February 2010 on the web.

3D Particles and Bumpy Textures

You can read our full article here.

See you soon on the next content update for Xarelok!

What a great idea! A one year review

And it is nice that you a re still working on it. This is one of the few project I believe that will come out one day. Most just die on these forums.

The city levels do really look awesome! I like them a lot and it keeps this game away from the permanent mine setting like in Red Faction.

Hoverbike Action

Ready for a special treat? The enemy arsenal has been expanded: We are introducing the deadly Hoverbike. The troops of the Worrajug Empire use these fast and robust hunting machines for quick and powerful attacks. Especially Rebels on the run can effectively be pursued and brought down with these vehicles. Too bad you will play as a Rebel on the run....

However, the weak point of the Hoverbike is that it allows the driver to carry only a gun of lowest weight: The Blaster. Already sounds much better, heh?

Scripting Issues

We have lately reviewed and and revised all scripted events of the game so far. Apart from occasional minor collision and path finding problems that the allied Rebels have, the gameplay is now very smooth. Once again, it became visible to us how important the subsequent verification of ones own work is: We've found so many scripting errors we accepted at first or simply kept them for later...

Feedback Implementation

We are now taking a break from level design and mapping to concentrate (finally!) on the implementation of community feedback and ideas. This means we also have to experiment a little bit and leave well-known tracks. The first and most important part will be to add in more environmental objects and entities in order to make the whole mapping look at least a little less boxy than before. Further major improvements will be a review of the overall lighting, and a possible rain effect in a addition to skybox experiments for the cities of Gor Rugi.
