Finally moving out of Ohio and heading west to california! So if there's any future DB conventions, I might finally be able to show up since they've always been on the west coast (i think). Whatever I can shove in my car comes with me, the rest stays behind until I send a truck for it. This is going to be a very long and lonely drive.

Sounds like an adventure to me. Road trip! I just hope your car makes it! Just pick up some hot female (obviously!) hitch hiker along the way, and the adventure is complete.

Radical hamsters skipping furiously into the blue ether, questioning their very existence while breathing out the bitter fog of smoked haddock.

I remember when I moved down south, I used to make round trips from wolverhampton to Falmouth to drop or pick up my girlfriend, 4-5 hours each way. I used to love the drive, especially if I timed it right where i'd hit Bristol by sun down so i'd get to experience a couple hours night driving through the stunning Cornish countryside. I had a 1.2 V reg Punto at the time, when i hit over 90 the entire car would start shaking so much that i couldn't see out of the rear view mirror because it was too intense.
From what i understand from my limited knowledge of American Geography is that they are a fair bit more away from each other than Wolvo to Falmouth is. I would relish in the opportunity to take such a roadtrip across America like that, but from my experience in American roads, i could probably understand that it'd be a lot nicer drive than over here.
One of the greatest discomforts i've ever experienced is trying to merge onto the m6 between 4 and 6 in the evening...

Ohio to Cali?!? That will be quite a big change! You might sink into the ocean in California, but at least you won't be buried in snow!!

I lived in Cuyahoga Falls a couple years ago before I moved to Atlanta. Besides the snow we got during the winter it was awfully nice(Even though I was able to record a bunch of music since I couldn't really get anywhere.) Fishing off lake Erie, drove up into Niagara Falls and saw an Indians game. Fun times!

There's something in this room that makes you can't speak well.

I was going to Sacramento, California for two months at the end of this month before cancer interrupted. That's luck for you.

Dude I feel sorry for you and you have my respect....
However if I have to read one more post where you find it necessary to mention your condition to any conversation....

I will not feel one bit sorry for you and my last words would be nasty to you...

Mentioning it once is enough bringing it into any thing and every thing you say is not, Are you looking for attention or what???

People DO find it annoying but out of respect don't say any thing.....enough already !!

@Phaelax
Enjoy the trip the change of scenery will feel like getting a clean slate....I have moved a few hunderd miles in my time the latest one over 500 miles away

I'm currently in columbus, born and raised. I'll be going to Sacramento, which is about 2,500 miles. I'm still planning out my trip, but I'll likely make the 6 hour trip to chicago first and visit some friends then head out in the morning from there, picking up I-80 which will take me all the way to my destination. Yup, that's over 2 days on the same road! Makes it virtually impossible to get lost, but a few turns or exchanges would keep me a little more alert.

I'm going to map out several different motels along my way and I always carry a few blankets in the car anyways, so just in case I get too tired I can pull off the road anywhere. I'm also going to put a few minutes on my extra Net10 phone, because it's the only phone I've used that seems to get service in very remote areas, unlike my tmobile iphone. It's just an extra precaution incase something happens.

For those that didn't already know, I drive a jaguar which I have yet to make an out of state trip without something breaking or failing. Nothing like coming back from SC and having your water pump fail in the summer time. Why do I mention the car? Well, jags aren't known for being very reliable. And I've spent the last few weeks working on fixing its most recent misfiring problems. It seems ok right now, and I have tools and extra parts with me just in case something happens on the road this time.

Longest road trip I've made is from columbus to myrtle beach and back in 2 days when I was 20yr old. But I've made frequent 500 mile trips to pocono. Wish I had an mp3 player in the car, but the 6 disc changer will have to suffice.

i've driven 80 to des moines and back via 40. both were quite unremarkable except for part of utah and the grand canyon (which might be worth the extra 200 miles now if you have any aspiration of seeing it... it's one big hole!) i do remember being unimpressed by the slower I-40... stop signs on freeways? alas, given your car's past, a bit slower pace might be the way to go. and, i seem to remember fewer stretches of nothingness on 40, as well.

godspeed!

Pah, forget staying in a comfortable bed! Slum it for the duration of the trip, I spent 2 days sleeping in my old car (which had the back seat space of a child's cot) back in the day when i got kicked out of my parents. Fun times.

Misfiring is a pain in the arse. The only thing i'd say is make sure the problem is fixed, i went through the trouble of changing all the spark plugs, leads and the coil which fixed the problem for about 50 miles until it happened again, turned out that after some recent work i'd had done (at a less than reputable garage) there had been some water that had leaked into the fuel system, ended up being quite expensive getting it all purged and cleaned out in the end. Just a word of caution is all.

Still envious of what you're doing, i'm hoping to move abroad for work later after a few more years teaching, America or Canada is where i'd like to go.
