Me and friend were thinking about starting a Website Hosting/Online Backup company. Before we do though, we wanted to see what people think about these prices:

Quote: "----Hosting Packages + Domain + SSL-----

Monthly - $3.95 + $9.95(.com Domain) + $19.95(SSL Price) ++
Quarterly - $3.49 + $9.95(.com Domain) + $19.95(SSL Price) ++
Yearly - $2.99 + $9.95(.com Domain) + $19.95(SSL Price) ++
Bi Annual - $1.99 + $9.95(.com Domain) + $19.95(SSL Price) ++

----JustHosting----

Monthly - $3.95
Quarterly - $3.49
Yearly - $2.99
Bi Annual - $1.99

*****Each Hosting Account has Unlimited Space Bandwith, FTP Accounts, Email, Mysql etc..*****

----FileBackup(Online Storage)----

5gb - FREE!
20gb - $4.99/year
50gb - $9.99/year
100gb - $14.99/year

++ SSL & Domain names are paid Yearly, so you get the domain and SSL for a year. Domain and SSL prices may vary."

If we were to start it, would anyone be interested in the services?

If you have any questions you don't want to ask on here, im free to answer them if you add me on MSN Messenger.

Your files are uploaded and downloaded through a Web Application. You need your user name and password to upload/download your files. We're also thinking about making "public files," although for now, this is only a thought.

are all the prices per month then?

I've been thinking about setting up a password protected proxy server for personal use at school, to bypass blocks. I'd be interested.

Yes, for example:

If John Smith Purchases the Yearly Plan(1 Year, I should have been more specific), he would then pay $2.99 a month.. for a year, or he may pay it all upfront for a price of $35.88 (2.99 * 12)

What are your server specs and would you allow root access on special plans?

Well honestly there is already hundreds of hosting/storage sites, so now it's more about the features/speed then it is the price. With that being said, what features will you have?

Wouldnt it make more sense if YOU have a website to show more information?

No, because they're deciding whether they should actually go ahead with this project. There is no point setting it all up to find no-one will use it.

If he already has the server, he may aswell take advantage of it and show us the speeds his server can achieve...

No, sorry this will not be an option. We currently don't own any servers. If enough people decide that they will purchase from us, we will buy the servers.

In fact, I already have the money saved up. I just don't want to waste it, if no one is going to join.

**** We have also been thinking of starting a new program. If we do get the website going, if you invite 3 other people, you will receive free hosting. That's a feature we will probably have that not many others have, if any.****

Hostgater offers big cash for referrals:

https://secure.hostgator.com/affiliates.shtml

So, it is something a lot of hosts offer. Most hosts offer cash referrals. From someone who's done hosting, it's totally not worth it at the bargain price range. There's too many companies who can offer it as cheap or cheaper than you and offer better service.

Honestly, if you have the resources to get your own server, I'd give game hosting (or some other niche service, like django hosting or something). You might make good money there. Charge higher, you'll lose the newbs who don't know anything about anything, and you'll gain customers who want good service and high uptimes.

Hmm, I wasn't aware of that, but anyway, We actually offer cheaper prices than Host Gator. For one year of Unlimited Hosting with Host Gator, it will cost you:

$6.95 a month

where, with us, it will only cost you:

$3.95 a month.

Not only that, with that Host Gator Plan you can ONLY have 1 Domain. Where, with us you can have unlimited. Infact, if I type in Google "Top 10 Hosting" and I look at all the top prices for Monthly Fees this is what I get:

Our Hosting was : $4.99
now : $3.95

1. Monster Host : $6.95
2. Blue Hosting : $6.95
3. IX Web Hosting : $4.95 listed, but I went to their website, and it said $6.95 normal
4. Just Host : $6.95
5. Host Upon : $4.95 (Only host to beat us on Monthly Price, so just for it, im lowering it to $3.95 a month)

In fact, if you can find a price thats lower than $3.95 a month (Thats not using Coupons or anything, just normal price), I guarantee I will match it.

Web hosts come and go every day, especially the ones that are too cheap to subsist. How would we know you wouldn't give up on this so fast like your game website?

When I chose to go with Dreamhost I'm paying more than your packages, but I'm paying a company that has been in business since '97. For a webhost, that's a lifetime.

I gave up on the Video Game Selling Site because I hadn't made not even one sale and it had been about a month. Which I kind of expected. I hadn't told anyone prior to starting it up. Their was no advertising. That's why I kind of wanted to get this out there before I started it up.

I understand that you guys don't really trust me, and why should you? I have done many stupid things in the past.. I know it, and I regret to. I really want to change though, and for the good.

I'm just asking nicely. Can anyone give us a chance? I encourage you that their is NO way we will let you down. Absolutely NO way. If it were to come down to it. I would sell my car to keep the hosting going.

- There are thousands of hosting companies you'll be competing with. Many will be cheaper, undoubtedly most will be more reliable, experiences and secure.

- Your top priorities as a web hosting company are reliability and support. People pay top dollar for these things. You put your prices too low, you're going to have to skimp on doing a proper job.

Find another business idea.

I don't think it's a matter of trust, at least certainly not with me. It's not like someone is going to host their critical, business website with a start-up/discount hosting service anyway. As someone already stated, hosting services are a dime-a-dozen (except for the free ones) and anyone who counts on their website for a paycheck is hosting with a major host.

I've been offering hosting services to my clients for 10 years and I make a small profit on it, only because I charge much more than you quoted. I also charge for maintenance and development. I have a niche, if you will. I'm not selling to the general public.

If you want to do it for the experience then I say go for it. If you want to do it as a source of income I would have to say don't, unless you're ready to make a large investment and give some of these other companies some competition. After all, it's not about actually being a good host, it's about having commercials during the Super Bowl.

Brian.

It's because you're advertising to the wrong croud. You need to find a niche to go into. When I started my hosting service, I did it for a small gaming community offering game hosting. (it ended up being too small a community) You need to find a niche of your own. General web hosting is completely saturated with top quality hosts, there's no way you could compete.

What were you expecting in the 2 days since you made this thread? Most small businesses won't even make a profit in the first few years.. I'd suggest to keep trying if you think you have something different to offer.

What sort of security measures do you take and what daemons are running?

Well, I have decided that I will instead by a reseller hosting account because I find that it will be cheaper and safer than running my own servers.

I will probably be purchasing one of these plans.

I do believe that I have something to offer. Cheaper prices, and over time I will have experience to.. hopefully creating the perfect solution for anyone interested in hosting.

I suggest you actually research yourself what it is that you're selling to people because if things go tits up then they're going to come running to you.

Sorry, I had a really bad day two days ago. I couldn't really do anything, because I fell and hit my head and got a concussion.

Now, to answer your previous question : I just contacted them and they told me they use a firewall which makes the server safe, and they have several monitoring services that run 24 hours a day. They wouldn't tell me anything specific though. They also have RBL on the mail servers from what I understand.

They also said that they do nightly backups, for everyone.

So, I would say I think they are pretty safe. I really like their price and plans so i'm really thinking about going with them.

The reason small hosting companies stay small is because they offer a second rate service.

Reliability and support will get you repeat customers. Repeat customers will get you referrals. Above all, over the best service you can.
