He didn't even explain it properly. Are you still in the ship but stuck on the scanning mini game or have you gone down for the mission and don't know how to get off?
If it's the first one, then reload your game because it's obviously buggered up. If it's the second one, have you tried completing the bloody mission?

I don't know if it's the same as the first one in mass effect 2(because i can't remember), but in the first mass effect you could press X on the map screen to return to the normandy.

Look for the key for returning to the Normandy perhaps?

I'm going to guess...press N? I can't remember, it's been ages since I played it on my PC.

Hold the 'F' key till it asks if you want to leave the mission...otherwise, ME2 quick saves a lot for you, so just reload your last save.
