Hey guys,

My wife and I are looking for new TV shows to watch. We watch and love Psych and White Collar, but since USA does ... weird... seasons, both are not showing right now, so we don't really have any shows to watch when we have nothing better to do. V starts again next week, which we enjoy, but we like to have 2 or 3 shows to pick from so we can watch a few shows a week.

We watch all our TV online (usually Hulu). So it doesn't matter if the show is still running or is in season, as long as it's new for us and we can watch it

So I'm asking you all for suggestions. Keep in mind, we really don't like shows with a lot of sex jokes or stuff like that. (which is part of the reason we're having such a hard time finding something good)

So... lets hear it! What good, fun, maybe even funny, TV shows do you guys love, that are family friendly?

I really enjoyed Burn Notice and Dexter back when I had cable.

Stole descriptions from Wiki cause well...cause I did:

Burn Notice:
Quote: "The title refers to the burn notices issued by intelligence agencies to discredit or announce the dismissal of agents or sources who are considered to have become unreliable. When a spy is burned, they are wiped off the grid, without access to cash or influence. According to the narration during the opening credits, the burned spy has no prior work history, no money; in essence, no identity. The television series is a first-person narrative (including frequent voice-overs providing exposition) from the viewpoint of covert-operations agent Michael Westen, played by Jeffrey Donovan."

Dexter
Quote: "The series follows the day to day events of Dexter Morgan's life, a forensic blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who also happens to be a serial killer in his free time. He was taught by his adoptive father, Harry, only to kill those "who deserve it"; mainly, other killers who have escaped the legal system or were never suspected in the first place. It shows him balancing an everyday life with his secret identity all while keeping up a facade of normalcy."

Those would be my suggestions for good TV. o.O

[Edit] Just checked Hulu for them, all hopeful and stuff...and can't really watch them on Hulu... Sad day for me.

burnn notice has great humor but all the episodes are kinda standalone, i wish it was more of a series.

Terminator sara connor chronicles was good

This other show i started watching called jericho about a small town trying to survive after US had been hit by nukes. Also prisonbreak was awesome if you like huge government cospiracies and car chases and shootouts and stuff.

Dollhouse was also awesome its about this illegal tech that can wipe peoples mind and inprint them with any personality/skill/memory. This tech is used to exploit people who do assigments like bank robberies, assasinations, they also do stuff like prostitution and sometimes they imprint people with certain specialists like detectives and stuff Anyway this tech eventually goes beyond control of the corporation that develops it.

Firefly is an unfinished show, but one of the best i ever watched. its about some former rebels that started a band of space outlaws/bounty hunters in their old ship called firefly. great charecters and story was gonna get developed but they cancelled the show before a story could develop, the show is still worth watching.

If you like this id also reccomend Outlaw star which is similar to firefly but anime. I loved outlaw star it was totally a badass show.

I started watching "Lost" this past winter. It was okay, but it seems to have gotten progressively worse if you ask me.

oh, I love Lost. My wife hates it though, so I just watch it on my own. This season is amazing.

Stargate SG-1. It's old now, and if you haven't seen it shame on you. But it is still awesome, and remains the best type of Stargate.

I don't watch a lot of TV, but my favorite show right now by far is Chuck. I'd recommend finding earlier episodes online, or renting the season DVDs. The shows in its 3rd season right now, but to fully appreciate everything going on you should watch from the beginning. It's got the perfect mixture of comedy romance, suspense, goofy action, and moments of B.A.-ness.

It's also totally family-friendly. There's secret agent fight scenes of course, but they're very tame, and rarely go beyond fist fights and standoffs with handguns (that eventually break down into fist fights). And I'm probably influenced by my experience from working at Circuit City, but the Buy More sequences are hilarious. It's also got just the right amount of romantic tension.

GAH! I'm craving a new episode now!

A lot of the shows I watch are pretty old now, but maybe you haven't seen them:

Miami Vice
All in the Family
The Jeffersons
Sanford and Son

I do watch some newer ones though:

House
Firefly
The Lone Gunmen

Both Firefly and The Lone Gunmen are shows that were canceled pretty early in their run, and only have about a dozen episodes each, but both are very excellent shows.

If you're looking for drama/fantasy/sci-fi, I love Lost and FlashForward.

If you're looking for comedy, the new series Modern Family is absolutely hilarious for most all ages, and shouldn't be too inappropriate for older kids (preteen-early teens).

Right now the show I love watching is "Legend of the Seeker".

Quote: "
The series follows the epic journey of a young woods guide named Richard Cypher (Craig Horner), a mysterious woman named Kahlan Amnell (Bridget Regan) and a wizard named Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander (Bruce Spence) to stop Darken Rahl (Craig Parker) from unleashing an ancient and terrifying power.

Meh, Modern Family is a rip off of the much better British comedy Outnumbered.

Have you even seen Modern Family? I get tired of people saying stuff like this, they do the same with The Office. Even if it uses another show as a premise, it's obviously because it was funny enough to do so. It's like some kind of cultural arrogance where the British version HAS to be so much better than the American version. I haven't seen the British version of the Office or Outnumbered, but just because there are two shows based on a similar premise doesn't mean one of them is hilarious and the other is bad, which seems to be what some people think. It IS possible for them to both be funny. It also depends on your sense of humor. It also seems you (not Brits, but you, INH) just like to start arguments for the sake of arguing.

EDIT: I just watched a few clips from Outnumbered (and it was funny), but I don't see how Modern Family has anything to do with it other than being a sitcom about a family. Modern Family has 3 hilariously dysfunctional families that are related, while Outnumbered has one family with three children. As far as I can tell, the characters are all completely different and have no relation to one of the characters of Modern Family. How is Outnumbered any more related to Modern Family than any other comedy based on the family dynamic?

Excellent choice. Are you watching the spinoff, Caprica? The season finale was nuts.

The two shows I'd recommend are FlashForward and Caprica. They're both exciting story-arc based scifi shows. They're insane.

Flashforward is my favorite show atm, and the only reason I'm watching V is because it has some Firefly(my favorite sc-fi series of all time) cast members...honestly it hasn't pulled me in yet, I wouldn't loose sleep if I missed an episode.

THIS.

Also, FlashForward is great if you like to think about what you're watching.

@Josh Mooney, have you watched Castle on ABC? It's got Nathan Fillion as the main character, and it's CSI with a comedic/romantic twist. It's a great show, especially if you liked Nathan in Firefly.

Chuck is FANTASTIC. It and NCIS are my two absolute favorite current television shows, with FlashForward being the runner-up to both of them. That's pretty much all I watch, except for the occasional American Dad! episode on Hulu (better and a tad more clean than Family Guy in my opinion). S'yeah. Watch Chuck.

No one mentioned Spartacus - Blood and Sand from Starz? Quite refreshing. Some wont like the stylized 300esqe cgi maybe.

And looking forward: A Game of Thrones on HBO, Can't wait. I recommend reading George R.R Martins ~4000 page quadrilogy first though

FlashForward is cool. Half of the main characters are British actors, which makes a change from your typical "British = Posh Evil Villain".

See, when we pretend to be Americans, hit TV shows are created (Like House and FF). When Americans pretend to be british, they look like stereotypical morons.

Bingo

Sorry if it seems I'm trying to start arguments, but I've seen both (Although not as much of modern family if I'm honest) and I much prefer outnumbered. ON the other hand I like the American office better.

Yes, and it's pretty awesome so far (3 episodes in), although I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under 17-18 years old or most females .

But my point is that they can BOTH be funny. I can't say I wouldn't like Outnumbered more or less than Modern Family, or the British version of The Office more or less than the American version, but if I did, that doesn't mean I can't like both . It seems like people think they have to choose between one or the other, or that one being better makes the other not worth watching.

Well, fair enough. My point is that no one should watch Modern Family without watching outnumbered, although the other way around is fine.

British comedies tend to use suggestion and uncomfortableness for comedy. American versions go overboard with slapstick and unrealisticness. Yes, it IS possible to have one version superior over the other, but since we're humans with different tastes, it's subjective.

It also depends on which one you watch first, in my opinion. I watched the British version back when it first came out, and loved it. I have watched all the seasons of the American Office and come away with two learnings: Americans love to drive shows into the ground with hundreds of episodes until eventually the audience takes them for granted, and they love slapstick over the top humour. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with either.

I could see the British Office happening in real life. The American Office? No way. Waaay too unrealistic.

Seinfeld lasted for 11 or 12 seasons but he quit when he was ahead. That was smart

When I watch a TV show, I don't really question whether it would happen in real life...
Just throwing this out there for British people, how does Monty Python fit into your range of comedies? I don't really watch British comedies (though I have seen a few random movies and whatnot which I found enjoyable) and from what I have seen Monty Python isn't really British comedy as much as just comedy in general. Weird, but hilarious comedy.

Yes, I think that's a fair point to make Jeku, whilst I am mighty proud of British humour, it's not superior or inferior, just different. For people outside of the UK, it might seem like a breath of fresh air from other types of comedies.

Truth is, as much as I love our humour, there's American humour that can have me in stitches, whereas others make me think violent thoughts. Same applies here, I'm sorry but Catherine Tate is less funny than she is 'bovvered'.

American Office vs British Office, well...in my opinion the Office is not funny, but then it clearly is a comedy tailored towards those who have worked/work in an office environment. Mind you, I've not seen American Office, so the slapstick humour might tickle me a bit. Who knows?

However, stuff like Spaced, The IT Crowd, Black Books, many of the UK quiz shows (Nevermind The Buzzcocks, QI, Mock The Week, Have I Got News For You, Would I Lie to You and so on), That Mitchell and Webb Look and Peep Show are all pretty awesome.

Peep Show is probably the perfect example of what you mean by awkward comedy, I actually genuinely cringe watching that show, I think a part of it is that we could actually find ourselves in a similar situation knowing either we could handle it better or could find ourselves doing the exact same thing. Either way, painful situation.

As we're talking of shows, I don't think I've actually been able to catch anything new, though I not too long ago watched all of Firefly after having the box-set lent to me. It was a good series actually, never really got myself into Sci-Fi, but I really liked it. A friend is trying to get me into Supernatural, however, she's already lent out her DVDs, so I've not actually had the chance to have a watch...sadly, I don't have TV-License or a Sky subscription, so my viewing is quite limited without breaking any laws.
