Really, no one has said it:

Click on the pic to go to a great Opeth song.

Also, Slipknot and Metallica aren't death metal.

In Flames and At the Gates. In Flames old stuff is technically Melodic Death Metal (At the Gates too), but it's still very very good Although their new few albums are some other genre... maybe alternative metal?

In Flames - Gyroscope (Old)
In Flames - The Quiet Place (New)
At the Gates - Suicide Nation

Why? Categorizing music helps us define our individual taste. What I was saying, is now he is going to get recommendations for Death Metal bands that sound nothing like the two bands he mentioned, if I point out that he might not be looking for death metal, but another genre, he might be able to get better recommendations.

Remember those old guys? They made epic renders, I think one of them was called DaVinci, and all they used was MS Paint. Sometimes it's just skill....

Couldn't resist...

But yeah, definitely try Death, Morbid Angel, Vader, maybe Hail Of Bullets or Cannibal Corpse. From Melodic Death Metal try Arch Enemy, Carcass (late) and already mentioned Scar Symmetry...

Yes, they are. They're a progressive deathmetalband, with different genres mixed, like jazz, blues and progressive rock. Their earlier albums had even a touch of black metal in them.

As slayer said, they are a progressive death metal band. They have multiple influences, but their main influence is death metal, which can definitely be heard, especially in Deliverance.

Not into Death Metal, I like Opeth's Acoustic album though.
I also hate all these different genre's and sub genre's of music even when most of them sound the same anyway.

Anyway, my advice would be to go for anything with the word 'Death', 'Corpse', 'Cannibal' or 'Black' in the name.

You could also enjoy a bit of Air Supply until you find what you're looking for...

Cannibal Corpse - Sentenced to Burn.

Carcass - Corporeal Jigsore Quandary, Heartwork, Black Star.

Death (RIP Chuck!) - Spritual Healing, Lack of Comprehension, Scavenger of Human Sorrow

Deicide - Lunatic of God's Creation, Scars of the Crucifix.

Morbid Angel - Rapture

^burn.

Well, I must wholly recommend Opeth, a very talented band, Watershed is a masterpiece of an album. Also they've released a track for God of War III...and Mikael Akerfeldt did some stuff with Ayreon (the Human Equation to be exact), sure they're not death metal, but definitely worth listening to...just because I can't stop.

Akerfeldt from Opeth has a big vocal part in this song, (alongside James LaBrie of Dream Theater and Arjen Lucassen)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQUCkRdgg9Q

Quite mellow...but hey, you need a range in your taste in music...if its any consolation, Akerfeldt and Devin Townsound do their own death metal vocals later in the album I believe.

On which note, you might like Strapping Young Lady...namely Satan's Ice Cream Truck:

doesn't have to be too sadistic ( cause that would be too freaking weird and creppy of their songs )

Edit: But, oh well, it might be cool... What I dislike the most is screamo that has the crapest lyrics and everyone likes it. Not only that, but some heavy metal will do as fine as death metal, I like the music you guys picked though

Go onto youtube and find a music video, and look at the comments with idiots arguing over what genre it is. Seriously, noone cares! 'this is scene hardcore crap for pussies' ... 'not its not its metalcore' ... 'metalcore sucks! listen to deathcore' it's pathetic.

I don't mean going into that much detail, and I certainly don't want to start an argument, let's just drop the whole thing.

Don't take anything people say on youTube seriously, they're all idiots as far as I am concerned.

Genres do help categorise music, the metal scene must seem insane for names of genres and I'll admit that it is and I'll even admit that I have been confused before now, however, the names are quite descriptive if you think about it and can help when you're recommending a band:

"Well er, they're sort of a melodic death metal band, but at times symphonic or even operatic."

To me...I have an idea of how such a band would sound, because I like that sort of thing, I might go and listen to it. It's better than, "I'ts heavy metal", because it'd cover such a huge broad range of styles.

I don't tell people off if they get it wrong - I may correct them sometimes, just because they'd probably prefer to. My Mum's a metal-head and she doesn't have a bloody clue, she calls Kamelot gothic and well, I'll allow her. It's not as if it's all that important.

When it comes to the electric genres, I probably look just as foolish, my friend is DJ and it's all 'electro' to me, but it might tell me it's drum and bass or trance, but I'll admit it, I barely have a clue...saying that, I can spot D&B fairly easily.

Personally, I use the label "Death Metal" to describe any type of metal that has cheesy deep growling vocals, and has the fast and dark (almost to the point of being comical) riffs and lyrics. So that pretty much covers every genre with the words "death" or "core" in it's name.

But there are forms of metal other than what I label death metal. You can't seriously listen to "Among the Living" and "Scream Bloody Gore" and tell me that there's no difference between them. Anthrax is "Thrash Metal", and Death is "Death Metal". There are definately bands that walk the line between the genres, such as Slayer or Sepultura, but the genres are still different.

You can't really say that any genre of music is better or worse than any other (except rap, which barely qualifies as music), it's all opinion.

The only Death Metal(ish) bands I can recomend that haven't been mentioned yet are Slayer, Sepultura, and Kreator.

Not all are death metal some are deathcore:
Abigail Williams, Aborted, The Acacia Strain, All Shall Perish, Waking The Cadaver, We Are The End, Whitechapel, Postmortem Promises, With Chaos In Her Wake, Winds Of Plague, Chelsea Grin, Cholera... They're all good in my opinion.

Haha fortunately this thread has not been contaminated with pointless whining posts from lesser beings.

Most of the good ones have been said so I can only re-iterate on the stuff said earlier. The early In Flames stuff is definitely very good and very technical. Behemoth are epic. Check out a band called Subcyde they have some awesome stuff.

Although they are more Deathcore, take a look at some of Job For A Cowboy's earlier stuff - it's definitely worth a look.
