a co-worker just did the same "upgrade" with the same results. i gave him a 300 watt psu (replacing his 250) and it worked fine.

and, i'm no guru, but...

this post on the nvidia forum states the fx5500 card needs 18 amps.

assuming you currently have a 250 watt p/s, you'll be gaining ~4 amps by upgrading to the 300 watt p/s.

subtract the amps your current card uses from 18 and if it's > 4, it should work fine.

btw, this post states actual 12v amps are specific to each power supply (vs using the standard watts= volts x current formula) so if both power supplies state 12v amps, you'd do best to go by those numbers, apparently.

5500fx? i say... kill it with fire. youll have more fun doing that than using it in your PC. but really? you will have to upgrade your PSU one way or another. if you have a 250W PSU, then it says something about your computer and a good video card wont do much if your ram/cpu is old. my first videocard i bought (was really stupid of me to blow 100 bucks on it at the time) was a 5200fx. i thought it would make my games faster, but instead, it made them run slightly worse and added instability to my mashine. kept crashing and stuff. I had a p3 600mhz CPU, and 256 mb of ram. that was my problem.

Buying a new pc would be the best thing,it would be a ton better than your current pc and you would have no problem running anything.

This is a cheap and good computer you can buy:

AMD ATHLON II X2 Dual-Core 245 2,9 GHz, AM3
60€

Gigabyte GA-M61PME-S2P, VGA, AM2+/AM2/AM3
40€

Patriot DDR2 2GB 800MHz RAM
45€

WD Caviar Blue 320GB, 7200rpm, 16MB, SATAII
45€

Power LC5550 550W 120mm PSU
33€

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4670, 1GB, PCI-E
70€

Total:
293€

This PC configuration will run any game for another 2 years.
