Sony to disable PlayStation 3 operating system feature.

Quote: "Sony has said it will disable a feature on its PlayStation 3 (PS3) console in a move some consider to be a pre-emptive strike to guard against games piracy."

The day I gave my friend the ubuntu disk, so he could install it on his PS3, this is announced.

Ah, what great timing.

Another said: "This is so stupid. I spent $500 on this system to be able to use whatever features it came with. Preventing hackers is one thing, but taking away a feature that I paid for is another.""

Removal of this PS3 OS Feature, Removal of PSP's UMD Drive, Stating that there will me more or a requirement of using there online store only in the future and so on, I got rid of my PSP, and would never get a PSPgo due to limitations it has, and added to that showing there making simular moves on the PS3, I was thinking of getting a PS3, but i may get an xBox now instead as all Im ever hearing about sony's products is limitations and removal of capabilities.

Face palms.

Notice how sony never said what will happen to ps3's who dont accept the update in there statement. By losing out on those features your further limiting the advantages. So it is mandatory.

I never understood though, do ps3's dual boot or do they overwrite the firmware?

Dual boot from what I've read of the feature.

EDIT:It's ridiculous though, one of the major points of the PS3 was actually this feature! Now Sony ruined it... Thanks really...

Its a very costly one;

Ive just murded your wife!

What? calls 911, arrested. After being locked in a cell with beefcakes and interviewed several times, admitting to killing his friends wife on each occasion. Pleminary hearing, you stand before a jury on the first of April and shout.

April fools!

I had you going there didnt i?

I sent her on holiday lol, you should have seen your faces.

Its a little overexagerated but ethier way its reputation suicide.

It's bit of an early April fools really. Look at the people in this thread that would have been fooled and it's only still technically March. Tut tut, Sony clearly doesn't get the concept of April fools really.

Haha, well wouldn't suprise me after how they got rid of back-wards compatibility, but if want it, you need to find a first generation which is quite hard to find, just so it can run Ps2 or Ps1 game.:S But if this is a Sony Aprils Fools, then I agree with Sepp, they honestly do not know the concept of April Fools.lol

Unfortunatly not an april fools, (I Don't Think), But do you still think a PS3's still better than an xBox?

Well, it'd have fewer features, sadly and a lot of people would be angry because they've paid for those features.

But at that point, the only reason I'd own a PS3 is for its exclusive titles and when I have the money, I will, but at that point, I'd have both a PS3 and a 360, so whilst it would be vexing if I bought one, at the same time, it wouldn't make much of an impact...those who only have PS3s on the other hand, will find it a problem.

Really? Are you sure? I only know one guy who installed Linux on his PS3 and he immediately removed it and installed the proper OS. It seemed like a niche thing and... kind of dumb. You can get a PC for the same price that can run Linux, so why waste a game system on this?

I think the word is, "Choice", china banned the R4 Cards for DS's, Sony's removing features and Hardware, PC's got stupid things like copy protection stopping installing a game on your desktop and laptop, Or should i say removal of choice, i mainly play games on PC rather than consoles, and i'll admit that i always download things like no cd cracks as i don't want to carry a stack of cd's\dvd's wherever my laptop goes.

Sony are so dumb. They release the most expensive console with unique features then wait 3 years while everyone else is raking in the money. Then they chop off features like diseased limbs and wonder why their customers are pissed off.
This is the equivalent of building a formula 1 car and then removing parts until it has the same value as an affordable family car.
Next generation I think I'll just spend the extra £300 on upgrades for my PC.

Well at least, if it is an April Fools, it isn't as obvious as YouTube's.

There's the option to have text only videos, to quote from YouTube:

Quote: "By using text-only mode, you are saving YouTube $1 a second in bandwidth costs. Click here to go back to regular YouTube and happy April Fools Day!"

What are people doing with Linux on their PS3 though, apart from hacking?

Seems to me that the PS3 has pretty decent support for streaming video etc, my brother wants/wanted to install it for some reason that he couldn't justify beyond just saying 'because'. To me, piracy on the PS3 seems kinda redundant, wait a few months and buy games for 1/3rd of their retail price - it's not like your stuck with the 360's game pricing.

I believe a lot of smaller educational facilities used PS3s chained together as render farms and as general purpose number crunchers as well- with linux on them and network communication they do effectively become very cheap supercomputers

(If you've seen the ranks of the PS3s that do SETI@Home and Folding@Home they're extremely impressive versus even the most powerful desktop computers)

Well you are not required to do the updates as long as you don't care about accessing PSN. I doubt the render farms will be impacted as long as they don't manually get the update. The updates are not pushed automatically.

This is ridiculous, It's as if I went and paid for a truck model that has a 6.0L V8, then a couple months later come to my house to remove the 6.0L and replace it with a 5.7L...

Why do Tech companies get away with things like this so often?

Oh I know - I was just saying that Linux on PS3 is used for more than just hacking/messing around (as per Van B's post)
