Don't know how many of you saw this, but Google released the source code for a GWT (read: javascript) port of Quake 2. They were getting between 30-60FPS on their laptops!

Check it out:
http://code.google.com/p/quake2-gwt-port/

there's a youtube video of them playing it in safari.

Note: This doesn't use any plugins. HTML5 canvas, HTML5 audio, HTML5 storage, etc

Saw this yesterday, thought it was pretty sweet but also remembered it was April Fools so I didn't check into it further.

I just quickly browsed the source that they have uploaded, it looks like they have actually done this.

@Charger, but this uses just HTML5 and JS no Java at all and no other plugins. I'd say that's amazing.

Uh... yes it is. This isn't running in Java. It's running in your browser. Javascript and HTML. No pluggins, like blobby 101 said.

With some effort they can have whole ENGINES running inside a browser, but that's still using plugins. This doesn't, you can just go to that webpage and you can play the game!

So yeah, it's special.

*bang head*

Quote: "Quake Live (previously known as Quake Zero) is a free FPS video game by id Software designed to run on x86-based computers running Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X or Linux that is downloaded and launched via a web browser plugin."

That's NOT the same as running a full-blow game from the browser with NO PLUGINS. It's 100% HTML and Javascript. This is the first and only 3d game that does what it does with no plugins.

Think of it this way...It's like Youtube, but instead of skateboarding dogs, it's Quake 2.

NO plugins people.

It might be a good time to learn WebGL and make a 3D browser game of my own. Would be fun

You can turn on HTML5 support for youtube videos that don't have ads

Oh, really? Wow, didn't know that HTML 5 is certainly very powerful!
