Geek Culture / What "girly" games do you people play?

I'll admit it... I'm a fan of the Harvest Moon series. My personal challenge in this game (most of the time) is having to manage your time and resources using what you have. And while you do this you have to be friendly with the townsfolk, grab yourself a (mostly) useless spouse for a better score and in the case of Rune Factory, find time to go dungeon crawling. Too bad a lot of my friends think the series is for girls due to the cutesy graphics, the heartwarming(???)storylines, and the fact that shooting/hacking things to death is not the goal (in Rune Factory, "killing" sends the monsters home). Oh... and the "Marriage Candidates" for female players. There's one in Tree of Tranquility for those girls who love the Indiana Jones type of guy... O_O

So... any guys want to admit to playing games most others consider "girly"?

In the beginning there was nothing. There'll be nothing in the end...

I was about to actually say that. Great minds think alike eh?

To be honest, I didn't consider Harvest Moon to be girly. I've got the demo of Peggle on Steam, but that's because I saw a friend playing it and the win theme is from the 9th Symphony. The only reason I class it as girl is because it has a Unicorn.

Hmm...for some reason I was expecting to list more than that, I guess I'm manlier than I thought.

Well, I found Robot Unicorn Attack to be enjoyable, but I don't really play it anymore.

I will live forever or die trying.

I had a Pink Gameboy once...it was 5 bucks at the game trade place and it came with Cool Spot 7up.

I also enjoy the Harvest Moon series. It's fun when anyone in your family can pickup that game, play in the same world, any time of day and effect it, makes changes or just mess around. Lot of fun.

I really liked Harvest Moon:Wonderful Life on the GameCube, it's actually one of the best examples of this sort of game I think. I wish they would go back to 3D on the DS versions, there's no reason why the DS couldn't do that, the 2D incarnations are lacking compared to the GameCube version.

I liked Animal Crossing too, so much cool stuff to collect and we'd all play that multiplayer - which is simply the best use of multiplayer on the DS ever.

I played both these games to death and have no shame . Viva Pinata is pretty good too - thing is that they are all incredibly deep games, lots of things to discover, lots of secrets that you might find just by accident. It's all about control I think, in Animal Crossing you can make the locals speak your lingo, and wear your designs. In Harvest Moon you have to manipulate and stalk women to get them to marry you. In Viva Pinata you have to keep the wrong elements out and often decide to cull species - If your Sparrow needs to eat a frog, then you have to decide which frog gets it in the neck. Trainee dictators and serial killers should probably check these games out, they can be pretty dark considering their look and appeal.

I was going to happily concur with this, until I realised that you spend 100% of the game, busting balls.

Sounds like a girly game to me.

I rented Viva Pinata and took it round my friends house (he has an xbox and i dont) and he thought I was crazy/childish/gay. I was interested in it because of the graphics but that aside it was quite boring.

I occasionally play girly games like farmville but I get bored of them very quickly (my farm is dead!).

The problem with girly or kids games is that they have exhaustive tutorials that treat you like you've never pressed a button before let alone played a game. I do get bored easily though

Aargghh I hate tutorials! Most of the time that I skip the tutorials, I have a horribly hard time, till half way through the game, I realize that I can... I dunno, press the g key to do some super awesome level beating thing. Then, it seems like when I go through the tutorials, they're incredibly detailed at explaining the three simple buttons that function through the whole game. BLEGH.

I hate those intro's on Harvest Moon, like every single game has this irritating intro where you have to meet everyone and name your dog and organize home insurance and all sorts of guff.

I wouldn't say Peggle was girly at all, it's a skill game more than anything. If I see a PC with it installed, I don't automatically think 'girly', I just wonder if they are better than me at it .

We should really be glad though, because I remember the 'girly' games that marketting folk came up with in the 90's - Barbie games from instance. Games are games at the end of the day, girls liked Mario and Sonic, Bubble Bobble etc. These days it's worth targetting games at women, especially casual puzzle games and sand box games.

On a side note though, what is the girliest game you've ever made?

I made a pairs game, where you have to remember and match pictures of Morrisey, Cpt Jack Sparrow and Robbie Williams... Made it for a friend - but at least I added a bloke version, that replaced the images with 'better' ones. Match the cleavage was much more fun . I did feel unclean after making it, maybe we should feel sorry for developers who have to make those female-targetted games.

I think a lot of the Facebook games are quite girly, or rather they seem to be played mostly by females.

I play the Sims quite a lot, males seem to play that and get bored/fed up with it.

*goes to steam games list* Erm, I also have Petz Dogz and Horsez but tbh they're pretty naf - I only got them cause they were on sale Other than that, I play zombie killing games a lot of the time

Oh, and I have stuff like Shrek for the PS2 but that is just epic.

And; hello everyone I haven't been around in a while

I own and have beaten almost every Katamari Damacy game there is... Don't know if they are girly, but it seems as if they are the only games my wife will play besides the sims. I have played those too, but usually spent my time trying to find inventive ways to torture/kill the folks in the game.

The fact that this is about to become a Hot thread means most who talk on the geek culture board............well, are a little feminine, at least in some of our choices with games sometimes.....(of course I believe that most here are guys.)

Heh... I guess I'll admit it's one of those games I find fascinating. Torturing and finding ways to kill them? I find that kinda boring. Now having them go out and juggle 20 or so girlfriends without losing a single one... that's hard.

In the beginning there was nothing. There'll be nothing in the end...
