you can get this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220032

for 400 dollars and put a new graphics card in. be sure it's not too amazing or you'll bottleneck (no 480s ) maybe try something in the 7 or 8000 series?

perhaps an 8400?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127473

might do you nicely.

I don't know what you want though, it's just a suggestion, and will net you about 450.

the comp's got
cpu- pentium dual core
ram- 6gb
integrated gfx- (would use your 8400 if upgd)

It's a pentium, though, which is VERY outdated.

Try this:

Quad 2.66 processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115057&cm_re=core_2_quad-_-19-115-057-_-Product

ASUS Motherboard (I have it, great mobo): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131347&cm_re=p45-_-13-131-347-_-Product

2GB 1066mhz Kingston Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104072&cm_re=2gb_ddr2_1066-_-20-104-072-_-Product

500 GB HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181&cm_re=500gb_hard_drive-_-22-152-181-_-Product

These are all the essentials, totaling $381.96. I have not checked completely but I think they are all compatible. You can throw in a graphics card and not be too much over $400. Please notice that this is a quad-core system!!

Hope this helps!

EDIT: forgot Windows 7; you could work that in there somehow.

Local stores tend to have a few OEM editions laying about they sell for not too much.

@ uncle sam-

essentials? how about a power supply? and what about that nice graphics card he wanteD? I feel a little better about the whole package computer, but if he's willing to spend a bit more than 400, than yours'll do (also, he may not know how to build a computer)

Typically I'd advise to avoid E-Machines like the plague.

Check out this WIP flash game from the Global Game Jam!

I did miss the power supply, you're right, and since he doesn't know how to build one from scratch a pre-built will be necessary, yes. I just don't recommend that system because it has a pentium processor, which is more or less ancient to today's processors.

travis gaitlin:

do not buy the emachine. I know 2 insances where they stopped working immediately after purchase, and most of the computers we have in the shop are emachines. also- that's got a horrendous gfx card.

stay away from brand name computers, if you have to get one, get asus, apple, or lenovo.

Just a thought, are there any pieces from your previous computer that are salvageable? If so you could probably take parts from there (if they're up to date enough with the new computer you'll be buying) and order some new ones to replace the broken components, then build it. Even if you don't know how to build, there are a lot of tutorials and stuff you could use.
