Epic have finally announced the release date for Gears 3 - April 2011. Apparently this is gonna be the final instalment in the trilogy, with humans fighting locust fighting lambent on the surface for control of planet Kindaearthbutnotquite...

The teaser trailer looks very emotive and cool - but so did the Gears 2 trailers, and that wasn't very emotive at all...

And the original Gears of War:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccWrbGEFgI8

I wouldn't have actually minded a couple of emotional bits...thought it'd give it a bit more oompf, for goodness sakes, humanity is on the brink of extinction! But then, I love good characterisation and think a lot of games that try to be cinematic lack that.

Well, I suppose I best hurry up and finish Gears of War 2, it's been sat on my shelf half complete for a while now. If GoW2 isn't that emotional, then shame, I mean, for goodness sakes, you're chasing what's-his-face's wife.

Perhaps it's just the steroids, you won't fool me into believing Marcus got those muscles by just working out. It's worse than lying about cake.

Really now? I thought they'd be a fourth for sure

I'm just poking fun, they announced (along with assassins creed and mass effect) that it would be a trilogy, lets hope we don't get some shoddy spin off series like some other games.
Maybe there will be a spin-off though.
Spoilers.

I for one am excited, but disappointed that it's not on a new console (as there was an announcement a while back that the third gears game would not be appearing on current gen consoles) and i've had my hopes up since then. Never mind, I'll still buy it, play through it once and then neglect it like I have done twice previously.

Really? To be honest, Cliff Bleszinski couldn't impart emotion into a game if he tried. The dude is a pre-pubescent teen stuck in a man's body, developing his pre-pubescent fantasies, and attaching pre-pubescent notions of loss and emotion to them. "What would make you really pissed off if you were a huge, muscular, space marine, fighting against all these alien dudes with huge guns and stuff, and all they ever do is try to kill you? How about they take your wife? Oh, and give him a beard of sorrow. It will make him look more torn up about it." The only thing emotive about that trailer is the music. Remove that, and all the emotion is gone(except for his beard, perhaps).

Sure, these games are fun at times, but wow are they shallow. I, for one, am not excited about this.

Also, does anyone else think the technology is looking dated beside the Crysis 2 trailer?

LOL! - I was thinking that too. I'm wondering how come Marcus has time to shave. Not exactly fair that he always makes an effort while the rest of them come to work how they please. I'm sorry, but people have to shave, it's the bane of your life as soon as your old enough - maybe they'll make a cut-scene of Marcus having a shave, with lots of ash floating about behind him and some 'sad orchestral #43'.

It's the knee-jerkingly-obvious trailer that we all expected. Let's show a scene full of emotion with the sad music, and maybe some corpses to show mankinds struggle against tyranny. Wonder where they got that idea - 100 bad hollywood movies and Halo3.

The annoying thing is that it just will not have that emotion in the game, it's 3rd person! - you can't show the player characters emotion from the back. And how many times should they run through an ash corpse of a mother and little kid - are these guys emotional because of Maria, the corpses, the impending doom, the music, or the ash in their throat that tastes of pork.

Personally, I think they should have sent non-Marcus off the rails a bit, make him reckless, make Marcus pee-d off with the fact that he hasn't had a holiday in years. They should just make the sort of video that countless angsty-14 year olds will make for youtube anyway.
I wonder if the music director is like the developers dad. They'd all like Pinkin Lark, or SOAD, or that song about bodies hitting the floor - but Dad is all like, ''NO, there's too much emotion (open palm points to non-Marcus' beard), we need to use my ambient orchestral stuff, and turn those sound effect down or theres no Halo3 before bed''.

In saying that, I'll buy it of course, I still haven't played through GOW2 - plan to finish it off on my projector for some added epic. I thought the first GOW was brilliant, and GOW2 was based on that, except they put some ridiculous platoons of enemies far away and pointless sometimes.

I'm mostly waiting on Red Dead Redemption 2 so GOW3 is just a sideways meh for me.

I seen this coming miles off.

Mainly since i read the book when i had a spare day or two.

Its a prequel to gears of war one and hints Heavily to the third installment and the second before they were realesed

*ahem*

We could have cooperated with the groundwalkers for our natural salvation, but they are humans, and they only understand dominance and owership. All that we have left is a war to the death. For all their so-called intelligence, humans are blind to the threat right before their eyes. we never stood a chance of enlisting thier aid, so now we fight alone. And we will stand on their corpses to do so.

I know what you mean, but it's a bit of an overgeneralisation. Some japanimation stuff is pretty awesome. It's like how a lot of pop music is rubbish, but some of it isn't.

Anime is my bordem Goto. Its hit and miss most of the time especially with the endings *shudder at 80% of let downs* but its more open to themes such as mechs.

I lol'd at tentacle women since rape will be on the other foot. Sorry freind is jerking me about it lol.

Gears has never been a must have game because the multiplayer sucks which for a AAA title isn't acceptable anymore.

The original was a great way to showcase the engine but there have been many games powered with UE3 which are better now.

Like Halo, I think any FPS will struggle to maintain its wow factor when the series passes 2 iterations. Epic should spend some of their billions of dollars on a new idea.

Balderdash! Multiplayer is not the reason I buy games and never will be. Gears of War Multiplayer was a lot of fun and was extremely popular as I recall. Just Cause 2 happens to be the single most fun game i've played in a while, not a hint of multiplayer around it. GTA 4 had multiplayer, but it wasn't very good, still didn't make the game bad, not by a long shot. Bioshock 2 or Mass Effect 2 are probably contending at the moment for my game of the year, never tried Bioshock's multiplayer, because i didn't buy it for that, mass effect has no multiplayer. Would you consider this unacceptable?

I'm with the I hate animé crowd, no animé has ever impressed me and I don't think it ever will. I'm not a fan of the art style either, just doesn't work for me.

I've got Gears 2 and i never tried the multiplayer. Actually the only game i've played multiplayer more than once on is Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. I go for games that have good single player.

If you want a good anime try Cyber City Oedo 808. For sure some of it's laughable, but it also contains a lot of awesome and badass.

I never said i actually liked COD that much. It's OK. All my mates seem to have it, so it is fun for that reason. Which are the good MP games then?

Best MP games i've played are Gravity Force 2/ Gravity Power, Alien Breed and Micro Machines. From back in the day when you had to play on the same machine.

Borderlands is great for multiplayer if you fancy something a bit different - 4 player co-op, 2 player split screen, on a FPS RPG, similar to Fallout3. I play it with my brother who usually hates these games, but Borderlands is quite unique and addictive once you get into it.

I'm not a huge fan of the new FPS games on 360 - give me BF1943 any day, or FarCry2 - I've never actually played MW2 online, and I never played too much of MW1. For me, the best recent multiplayer FPS is MAG on the PS3 - even if you disregard the fact that you have hundreds of players instead of just 16, it's really tense, and it's a glaring jab in the face to Microsoft's paid XBL service. How come I get 256 player games for free, but I have to pay for 16 player games?, did we loose a freakin war that nobody told me about?. Anyhoo it's a really well balanced game and not so much selfish gaming - it's well worth healing team mates and sticking together, coordinating attacks. Makes for a much better online experience I think than anything the 360 has to offer.

I enjoy multiplayer GTA, because I'm a sneaky git, and it gives a lot of freedom. If your bored playing online GTA, then your doing it all wrong .

It seems everyone measures up to Cod nowdays. Its like its popular or something

But yeah the user base is specific to online play and its at the top of the boards so comparisons go hand in hand.

On topic:
Haven't talked to him in about a year, but I'm pretty sure I saw Sir Manfred's name in the EGI credits. He's been building the character models(high poly for normals) for Gears of War since the original. If anyone remembers he was an active TGC forum member about 5-6 years ago. He taught me everything I needed to know in the ways of organic modeling which I still use today.

Fixed

People generally compare games to CoD because MW2 was so hyped, they hyped it up to be the second coming of Christ and it turned out to be the second coming of diarrhea. Not good.

Multiplayer doesn't make a game, definitely not. The only games I have interest in MP is in CoD4 (kinda contradictive to what I just said but I have nothing against CoD4, amazing game and I still play it today if there are people online), Halo 3, and maybe Battlefield. My favourite games have always been singleplayer games, Just Cause 2 was amazing, Oblivion was amazing, Mass Effect 1 and 2 were fricking phenomenal games, and I've never stopped playing Fallout 3. Multiplayer will destroy the reputation of a game because these days it's all people give a crap about.

Saw this trailer the other day. I honestly think the GOW series is a little overhyped and overrated. Sure it's alright if you just wanna kill some time running around, playing as some overrated bad a** with a chip on his sholder, shootin monsters that look kinda like something I deposited in the lavatory, lol. But other than that, I don't really see what sets it apart from other shooters out there. But that's just my take.

Yep I agree Chris... Gears of War 2 was EXTREMELY over-hyped... From the test videos on the Unreal engine showing the new features, next to none of them were in GoW 2. I was really disappointed.

I liked Gears of War 2. and GOW1. Sure the story was shlocky and awful. About as good as a Steven Segal movie, but then there are next to no games with decent story. Seriously, in 80% of games you shoot things. You kill people, pretty much throughout. The story is just a mechanism to get from 1 gun fight to the next. That's why it's so hard to have a decent story, because nobody could viably spend that much time killing people, and not be totally messed up.

I think that you have to give Gears a break. At the end of the day it's a very solid shooter. Probably the best Third Person shooter I've played, and at least semi original. Recently got the latest COD, and that's hardly innovating in it's 700 version is it. Still an FPS. Still killing faceless terrorists.

End of the day, it's just a trailer. If they were honest about the gameplay and story it would just be Marcus saying

Marcus: "dang, your wife is dead?"

Dom : "yeah, she's dead."

Marcus :"But, dude that was like 2 years ago, aren't you over it yet"

Dom : "Yeah, kinda, but I have limited conversational skills, and there are all these locust still alive, so I'm thinking maybe we all pretend to still be angry about maria, then travel back in time to Pompeii"

Marcus : "We'll still get to kill things?"

Dom : "Nah I'll be more like the sims, you guys and the locust will have to keep me from slitting my wrists open in the bathroom with a pair of scissors"

Marcus : "What?"

Dom : "nah I'm kidding, we'll just shoot things"

Marcus : "oh, ok."

and then it would be 5 minutes of pre-rendered CGI footage of them shooting things in the torso.

I want robotic legs.
