Geek Culture / Considering purchasing a PSP in the future. What do y'all think?

So, a while back I never would have found myself saying "Hey, I wanna get a PSP!". That was until I finally took the time to read reviews, check out the games that are available for the system, and play a couple of demo games at the local Best Buy. And of course now I want to get one.

I'm just wondering; to those of you who have owned/played/used a PSP (3000 system, not the new PSP Go), what do YOU like about it? What made you want to buy it originally? What do you think are the pros and cons of the system? What are your favorite games for it?

Also, what is the average battery life? I've heard it's as little as two hours, which will be a major disappointment to me if it's true. I've also heard a screen protector is a must. So...yeah. What do you guys think?

Reason for buying; Monster hunter, by now people should have figured im a fanboy but ill leave that for now. Planes, long car rides, hell even trains, its a god send to have on all three. Battery life is about 4-5 hours here ^-^ it might just be the battery type or something. About 1500 hours of abuse and not a scratch on it, so no idea about the screen protecter jib, i am on the older model though if it differs.

All in all its a nice thing to have on journeys or if your firends have one, Ds is the same but i prefer a thumb stick than a actual stick so i dont perticulary like it that much. Though i have bad experiences from my bro playing sponge bob square pants for 5 hours stright in a car without headphones. I Thank f- he dropped the cartridge in the pool.

Sum up, get one or get a Ds.

I'm personally not a fan of the PSP, mainly because of the poor control layout.

Yeah, the control layout isn't my favorite, but I got used to it when a friend let me play on their PSP for a bit. I like the layout on the new PSP Go, but not the way the rest of the system works (I don't like the sliding screen or having to download all of the games).

One of the more important questions I ask myself when buying any gaming console is this... does it have the games I like to play?

I went and got one because of the RPGs I've loved playing. Class of Heroes, Phantasy Star Portable, the two Star Ocean remakes, and Harvest Moon: Back to Nature (boy and girl versions) are on that system.

I think its control layout is really badly done for games like First Person Shooters (unless they're like DOOM for the PSX, which had no "look" feature in it). Racing games are pretty good on it (I've played Gran Turismo on the system, but don't own the game yet) as long as you're not expecting analogue acceleration (if you can call it that).

In any case, the choice is ultimately yours. After all, one buys a console to have fun, right?

In the beginning there was nothing. There'll be nothing in the end...

Ah, the main games I'm interested in for this are FPS'. I want to get all of the Star Wars Battlefront games for it (I love them), and possibly a Call of Duty one...but the other games are Gran Turismo and Little Big Planet. All in all there's at least five games I want for it already (more than when I bought my DS a while back), so I know it would definitely be a good system to buy.

i have a PSP 3000 and the things that i like about it is that you can see it perfectly in the daylight and skype mic sounds really good and to me it seemed like an HD PSP with the enhanced colors.
some of my favorite games are LBP, Starwars Battlefront renegade squadron, assassin's creed bloodlines, Medal of honor heroes, GTA LCS, and Mortal Kombat Unchained
The games you want
Gran Turismo = Awesome
There is a COD game for the PSP, Not sure what its called
LBP = Total Awesomeness (hard level editor)
Starwars Battlefront = Pretty Good
The battery when its new is 7.2 hours of gameplay and ive had mine for 3 years now and it has went down to 5.8 hours, quick loading time for games
i would watch it though, games are sensitive to abuse
it even has digital comics!
rss channels
and if you have a PS3 you can use it to manage you system from far away distances as long as you have wifi then you can listen to your ps3's music, watch its videos, but no gameplay feature yet
so that is most of the features of the PSP, any questions?

Hmm...I've read and watched a couple of video reviews on the PSP 3000 system, and have heard something about an "interlacing" problem. Can anyone confirm that? I don't think it'd bother me too badly, and I didn't notice it when I played demo games, but I'd still like to know if anyone out there has encountered the issue.

I recommend trying to find a hacked psp, one of my buddies bought one when we were in Iraq the second time and it had a ridiculous amount of games loaded on it.

Try and find a hacked PSP (eBay), not for the downloadable games, but for the homebrew! You can easily program a game in LUA on it (many games made already), GBA, PS1 games, Nintendo 64 games, youtube player, etc.

I like PSPDisp, you can connect your PSP to your PC and actually watch a movie that plays on your screen of the PC! Oh yeah, you can remote control your PC as well with it.

Hehe, cool! I may just look into a hacked one then, for the sake of possibly making games on it.

Although, to be honest, I've sort of lost interest in the PSP already. Too much of that hassle we call "real life" has been getting in the way.

Oh yeah, and there's that whole "have to save money for college and not blow it on games" thing. So...yeah.

But thanks for the info everyone!

I reckon you should get the PSP. I have dropped mine countless times over the last 3 years, it has not broken. Don't get the lite one, my brothers broke after a week.
