So i have come to the conclusion of upgrading my pc by hand and by myself i haven`t ever touched anything within a computer beyond the ram and graphics card. So i have the socket type 775, and since i am in game making, and i am a frequent gamer my self. I`ll need something that could run crysis and other programs with out having to much trouble, i need something that needs to be compatible with multitasking. So i was hoping for some help on recommending a processor i am currently looking into Intel Core™ 2 Duo E8500? would that be a good processor?

Also is the only thing that has to be compatible with the processor and mother board the socket type?

Thanks guys.

If you wanted you could go with a core 2 quad. My friend has a q8400 (I think) at ~2.7 ghz, and can run farcry 2 on it no problem.

AMD Phenom II dual core 550 Black Edition.
Then unlock the four cores of it through your BIOS, simple stuff.
I manage to run Counter-Strike Source's benchmark with 700fps+...

Sadly for that you'll probably also have to upgrade your Motherboard to one that supports AM3. Could end up being around £200+.

But if you want a quad core -- Then actually get a proper quad core.

I had a good old P4 a year or so ago...I don't really miss it. Soon I'm going to need to upgrade again. My Pentium D 2.8 keeps hiccuping on me in FL Studio when running a whole bunch of instruments and effects. It also runs at 100% in BF2 when there are 25-30 or more players, causing a slowdown.

I'm with puppyofkosh. Go with a core 2 quad if you can afford it.

A Core 2 Quad will indeed last for some time. I have upgraded almost every single part in my PC since I bought it (2006? 2007?) and the Q6600 (2.4 GHZ overclocked to 2.9) still works, and how!

So yeah, a C2Q will do the job (it's awesome for video editing too!)

Intel Quad Core Q6600. Best processor I have ever used and still use (Not comparing it to the i7 cores!)

@Lemonade - Hello.

Suggestion for your "hiccups". Have you tried disabling multi-threading in Fruity Options? Some plugins really don't like that mode and glitch like a bitch.

I had similar problems running multiple NI plugins a while ago and disabling that solved it.

Same goes in any other audio host like CubaseSX, etc.

My server runs a 3.2ghz P4. It's awesome for uh, what it does (runs linux with virtualmin gpl)

You can't get by (well, I suppose you can, but it's tedious comparatively) any more with a single core processor when it comes to multitasking, gaming, or any real desktop work.

I reccomend an E8400 core 2 duo or a q6600 core 2 quad.
