I was wondering today weather physical mod-chips are legal to install and use in the UK.

Around about a year ago I was having an argument with a member of the Sony technical support staff after enquiring about the price of a repair for my PSP which had a problem with its ID Storage, I informed him that the console was in fact running modified software (something which they would have found out when they repair it) in order to get an accurate idea of the cost. he preceded to tell me off as if I was a child, trying to convince me that modifying the console was illegal, I wasn't going to tolerate the way he spoke to me and I informed him that I know the law and knew for a fact what I did was all above board.

But I was wondering today about actual mod-chips the sources of information I have looked at have been rather vague or have given me conflicting answers, all can gather at the moment is that they were somehow were originally illegal but have now magically become legal. im not sure if this is due to the fact that the original Playstation mod chips did only 2 things namely allow you to play pirate copies (illegal) and allow imported games to be played, but the more modern ones allow access to a massive range of legal functions not available in the consoles original state.

I was wondering is the law is actually specific in any way about the legal status of all this, all I can seem to find is a load of conflicting information some of which may be outdated.

Thanks its sorted now though, the price he quoted me was extortionate so I decided to either attempt to find a way to fix it myself or just buy another one. Attempting to fix it myself paid off and I now have a fully functioning PSP which is also running custom firmware And I managed to win the battle against the sony people.

Don't know about it being legal or otherwise, but to put a physical chip inside a console will void the warrant sticker so you lose out there.

Well that's not an issue. All my consoles are past the warranty period now anyway.

Apart from the legal stuff the only issue with me modifying consoles is that im quite bad with a soldering iron (shaky hands), when I was at school electronics projects where a bit hit and miss but since then I think I've improved.
