Geek Culture / Star-Trek style force-field in development

This is, as Spock would say, "fascinating!".

British Military scientists are developing the basic technology that could eventually lead to force-field shields similar to what we "see" in Star Trek and Star Wars. Currently, the "shield" is really just a pulse of electromagnetic energy that repels metal projectiles and it's completely invisible (and always will be, I imagine), but it means we're a lot closer to developing futuristic space technology!

Now all we have to do is develop a warp drive, transporters and artificial gravity fields, and we could have an Enterprise within the century!

Here's the article.

What do you guys think?

Unfortunately, if it only repels metal, we will eventually stop using metallic weapons and ammunition, just like with Magneto in X-Men. It is a really interesting idea, and technology though.

We are actually coming close to first contact, which happened I think in the year 2063.

Not sure if this is real or fake, kinda hard to tell. The best part is the google ad at the bottom that states: "Bid on British military vehicles now!"

What do you propose we fire then? Potatoes?

I don't think you could find a material cheap enough and hard enough.

Copper, silver, aluminum, lead, magnesium, platinum and tungsten.

Mainly tungsten would make a applicable replacement. That is though if were are against another super power who could afford to change the munitions.

and exactly where is this BAD? means we can use that kind of metal for better, NON WARFARE STUFF.

People are lazy, most likely use plastic based ammo. = fuel war.

I wonder if they'd turn to bio based ammo. i know nuts and fruit pips are extreamly hard in some plants.

What's next? Plasma based force fields and lattice laser barriers (saw this on the Discovery Channel)? Imagine the amount of power it's gonna take to keep the thing up.

I imagine if this becomes reality certain world governments and special interest groups are gonna complain...

In the beginning there was nothing. There'll be nothing in the end...

Shields up, Mr. Worf. Number one, you have the bridge. Engage.

Sorry, been watching reruns of Next Generation every night for the past few months. Wonderfully cheesy.

Lol bond1. Actually watched First Contact this morning. All day when someone's asked me something I'd respond, "Perhaps today is a good day to die!"

Anyway, plasma weapons are actually a banned weapon, well technically banned by the geneva convention if I'm not mistaken. Though didn't stop certain world leaders several decades ago, but I won't go into that.

I thought those were sub-space weapons? Anyways, nothing can stop me, I FART in your general direction! Stop that force field!

Hehe, mixing Monty Python and Star Trek technology.

Do they even have that technology? I don't see why we couldn't, but I'd imagine it would be rather "primitive" than what we'd expect. Then again, technology's changing so rapidly anymore that it's difficult to judge just when or if something could be developed.

See, here's another great example of money being wasted for no apparent reason, where it could be used to feed starving Africans... WHY do we need this shield? It's absolutely USELESS! And the power consumption to cancel out the force of a bullet or even a rocket is going to be enormous...

Hey comet, you should cancel your internet service so you can feed the africans.

They have this all wrong! Reverse the polarities and steal their weapons

If this works how about an electro-magnetic gun?

Reversing the polarities would increase their chances of getting hit by a missile launched by the enemy.

Could you use it to fire things? Like say, a guy in a suit of metal armour. Because this could be a cheap means of transport.

[center]You can get further with a smile and a gun than you can with just a smile.

This is the risk you take to look awesomely cool

Imagine a tank driving through a city and everyone's guns (and random metal stuff) flying off and sticking to it. "Yoink, yoink, yoink, I'll have that thank you"

Quote: "Could you use it to fire things? Like say, a guy in a suit of metal armour. Because this could be a cheap means of transport."

and then have another electro magnet that slows you down at the other end.
that would be pretty darn cool.

I was thinking about a personal force-field. You could have a really thin metallic suit and be completely impervious to gunfire, even RPGs!
I'm not sure if you could fit the superconductors onto your suit with current technology.

[edit]
now I think about it don't the Japanese hi-speed trains use electro-magnets to propel them along the track?

Like a coil gun? They still have to make the capacitors for them smaller than a car first...

Not to propel them (as far as I can remember), just to levitate them.

Unrelated, but worthy of mentioning here.

Someone designed a lightsaber, and they technology exists today; it just needs a little upgrading, and then we could have it in less than 50 years!
