Okay, I know this thread might be... well, weird. And pointless, but... I was "enlightened" a few days ago... And thought that I'd share this "enlightenment" with someone... So. Here it goes:
Every game engine so far uses objects, segments, lights, etc, or something similar as far as I know. So... I thought, what if all those would be "wiped out" and... everything would be made of small bits, that would be attached to each other with "strings", so everything could move without them being animated, and there would be perfect physics on everything, etc!
And the same would be with lights, but a little differently:
Every light ray would be made of small, almost transparent bits that would have no collission.
So they would "blend" in the environment, and there would be natural shadows on everything, etc.
It would be so DAMN AWESOME.
...but impossible? But well, anyway...
Discuss, people.
(but don't be mean to me as I have no slightest clue about if it'd be possible )

isnt that more on the programming side of things and not on the hardware?

Are you talking about voxel-based games? Sounds like what your describing. Though this is old tech.

They're apparently trying to move to this eventually, but hardware can't handle it currently. I'm sure we'll see things done like this within ten years at most, though.

In fact I saw a REALLY awesome voxel-based destrutable terrain demo in DBP a year or two ago...I should try to find that again...

BMacZero: I've actually played a voxel based Wolfenstien 3d where you could use your knife to literally cut through anything. Extreme fun.

http://advsys.net/ken/voxlap.htm

Something for anyone to play around with. I'm actually surprised at how high-rez some of the games they made with the engine are.

Then there is Lucas Art's insane DMM engine. If you could combine that with an advanced voxel system...oh man I'm geek'n out!

Hmm...doesn't work on a 64 bit OS.
