Hi, Just wondering if there's any good software out there for recoring a video of what you're doing on your computer? Ideally with a fast frame rate and with decent sound?...oh yeah and free would be nice

I've found some, but they're a bit rubbish.

Thanks

Camtasia Studio works very well. Unfortunately it isn't free though, but they give you a 30-day trial to tray it out.
In my opinion, it outweights Fraps (which has a free edition) by far.
It depends what you are going to record, I suppose. But I'd say go with Camtasia if you want real good capture quality (it will also let you record only a certain area of the screen and has a nifty pause function that will reset the cursor and everything to what it previously was when restarting recording. So you can look up stuff and not make a fool out of yourself if recording a tutorial or whatever ).

Thanks Rudolpho. I seriously can't be spending that much right now, especially on something that isn't going to really help my game. (long story ). I'll have a look at Fraps though . I'll keep it in mind for later though, it does look really good...Camtasia that is.

Thanks

There is camstudio, which is free. I've never tried recording games with it, so I don't know how that works out, but other than that I've had no problems with it.

Thanks puppyofkosk, but I tried that before posting here. I couldn't get it to get a decent frame rate at all.

Fraps seems to work quite well though it'd be nice to be able to record my desktop and not just games, but this'll do for now. I think I'll probably have to settle with that unless someone knows of something better...for free

try Jing. It's free. I don't think it's fast enough to do stuff like games or videos. but it's good enough for recording most everything else.

I thought Jing was limited to 5 minutes of video?

There is always Screen Toaster.

Although, I can't say I've tried it myself, looks promising.

[EDIT] Its a bit naff, limits you to 20mb of video, which is quite long at a small resolution, but at 1900x1200 its only a few seconds.

Yeah, even at 1366x768 the MBs added up quickly. About 1 minute of video was equal to 1.50MB, so one would be able to record ~15 minutes worth of video at that resolution. Not too bad, actually.

Camtasia Studio is the best one Ive come across so far. It has a lot of great features. Automatically zooms in to places of interest (typing in a textbox for example) which can be disabled or enabled. Barely affects the framerate of the app being recorded too. And a bunch of other features along with a built-in video editor that lets you add title pages / credits and other things like pop-up notes and callouts. Pretty nifty.

I came across this on my search as well:

Looks like a budget version of camtasia.

I second Camtasia Studio, there are some things you just have to pay for if you want to avoid too many headaches. I use it quite often, two geeky thumbs up from me.
