I bought these a few years ago and returned them a week later: Klipsch ProMedia 2.1
Some people swear they're just the best, and while the subwoofer did have impressive bass (and clean), the satellites had weak mid-range. The self-proclaimed "audiophile" at best buy didn't know what he was talking about.

I looked these up on Amazon after seeing a lower model (AV30) in a store. Majority of reviews give the speakers very high marks and make note of tight punch and great midrange levels.
M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 ($136 on amazon, $150 on newegg)

From what I've read so far, the AV40's sound impressive to me and I might buy them. Maybe I can find a pair on display somewhere in town and listen to them for myself, as I've already found out the average listener doesn't know what good PC speakers can sound like.

Does anyone have any recommendations they'd like to share? I'll go ahead and note that I'm not using integrated audio on my motherboard either and my existing Boston Acoustics produce great clarity that I haven't heard matched yet by other PC speakers, but the audio jack is failing on the subwoofer so hence why I'm replacing them.

I have a logitech 5.1 system, it is freaking amazing. Paid about 70 bucks for it.

Here's a 2.1 system that I'm sure is even better, but I've never heard em. But I do know logitech makes some kickbutt speakers.

I heard that the pro media 2.1s are amazing speakers, but that they have a manufacturing flaw and die quickly.

I've read all about the Z-2300. Supposedly, if you wan't booming bass, get those. They can go LOUD. but it's not necessarily the most accurate or punchy bass. Or so I read.

I'm currently using these paired with a sub:

Couldn't be happier.

Oh, just a word of advice, try to avoid creative speakers will volume control pods. They tend to fail!

I own Logitech Z-530 5.1 sound system,it's super awesome. The bass is great, the woofer is also pretty good,600w. I have the other 5 speakers placed all around the room to give a great surround. Really worth the money, also very cheap.

Current Boston Acoustics: 55Hz (on subwoofer)
M-Audio Studiophile: 85Hz - 20kHz
AudioEngine: 50Hz - 22kHz

I might need an additional sub to reach the lower response of my boston acoustics, but most reviews say a sub wasn't needed. Those audioEngine speakers are a little pricey but look very nice with a better freq response. I'll look into them further and decide whether or not I want to spend the extra dough.

I gave up on PC speakers. I used to have a creative 5.1 set but now I just plug everything into my amp and then use these:
