You must have an identifier, or at least something that makes people think you are one.

I guess mine would be my giant headphones, and Windows Aero T-Shirt.

Most people don't think I am a nerd. But, if it was anything, it would be my monotone voice.

The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc.

It also describes someone who primarily watches sci-fi television series / movies and considers facebook to be a social life.

Nice! *high fives*

-----------------

Hmm...probably what identifies me as a geek right now is the fact that I'm reading a book on programming in C++ for a bit of a "light read".

And probably because sometimes I talk in code. Yea.

people tend not to label me as a nerd or geek, until they know me . On the outside i look like a very untipical metal-head. Though when you enter my room and see the 7 computers i have(mostly old ones) and the amiga 600 on the desk, they know im a geek. Though not even my friends knew i liked to program untill earlyer this month when i used DBPRo for a presentation. Now im labelled as a super geek . Also the fact i use linux.

Hmmm... I kinda got into that... until I noticed most people were just being retarded.

Not that, say, waynes world isn't an awesome movie, but some of the people just need to calm down... like my friend that bought a $2000 flying v guitar with (a picture of ) wings covered in blood on it. It's cool... but he can play a tune for crap! For most people it's all talk :\

Aaanyways... I talk to my girlfriend about programming too (she's programmed for school). Uhhh, in my math class, I've kinda sorta interrupted the teacher to ask an important question or... errm... to correct her. That's made me seem like a dweeb. actually [rant] one time she was doing something on a graphing calculator, and we were estimating the local minima of a graph, and she narrowed rounded estimates to two points, like f(x) as x increases was {(1,5.213),(2,5.211),(3,5.211),(4,5.214)} and she said that therefore, the local minimum has to be between 2 and 3. I raised my hand and said "not necessarily", and she said "yeah necessarily", so sure i figured I might be wrong, and wrote down a proof of what I thought on paper. When I approached her about it, she said something to the effect of "I know I'm right and I have better stuff to do than argue" X_X. Not only did I look like a complete retard but there was no reparation. BLAAAAARRRGH!!! [/rant]

The fact that I am posting on thegamecreators.com, I have a printed list of technology tiers for an RTS in front of me, a bag of chips sitting on a laptop on my desk next to the pilsner by my monitor, the new Star Trek movie playing on the TV in the background, and the constant urge to F5 everything should probably dictate my nerdage. But I deny those accusations, sir.

I think theres a difference from a nerd and a geek, A nerd is a know it all, Constantly reading up to learn more on the subject, And a Know it All Mentality, Whereas a Geek is more hands on, Dosn't usually bother with Instructions, but more a Trial and Error method of Learning, Just my Opinion, but I fit into the second discription more, (Geek)

Whenever I hear people arguing about the meaning and differences between two words, they usually insert all the good connotations into one, and all the bad into another... I think the difference is arbitrary.

just sayin

the way i see it geek or nerd is someone who is really into tech stuff and usually really good at something. When i lived in america i got the whole thing about geeks and nerds being the loosers and having no life and stuff. Well in russia where i live right now its way different. makority of all guys are geeks/nerds. and they are dominant in this society. and the guys who are all into sports popular cool stuff and someone who in america would be considered a cool/popular kid and isnt really interested in tech stuff, in russia these kinds or people are considered the loosers. i might be stereotyping here a little about the americans i lived in massachusssetts so if its any different in other parts of US, forgive me

It also depends on what part of the country you live in. Where I grew up, jocks are considered the cool kids, but where I am now they get laughed at.

The fact that I program computer games for fun. Though I try not to bring that one up in conversation, because it is always met with awkward stares. But if a friend comes to visit, I will force them to beta test the latest version of Dego with me.

I was talking to my friends today about Halo:

Friend:"Oh hey, do you have an Xbox?"
Me:"Yeah, but it broke."
"Ah man, because ODST came with a beta for Halo Reach."
"Oh yeah, I heard about that! It's going to be so cool! I heard the new engine can support like 4 time more polygons!"
"..."

They had no idea what I was talking about.

Also when I was sanding my clock today I was treating it like a 3d model. "Oh, too sharp here, gotta soften that... oh, now it looks like marshmallow, gotta sharpen it a bit more..." etc., etc.

I'm making a clock in Tech Ed. And I just finished cutting it, so now I'm sanding it.

I think there's some geometry I could clear up myself.

The correct response would be "No, but I do have an Xbox 360" unless you have both, then you'd say "Yes" and as soon as they mention Halo Reach you argue that he said Xbox and not Xbox 360.

Yes, but remember, these are the normal kids, not the awesome game-loving people we have here.

They are convinced graphics are one of the most important parts of a game AND have never heard of steam.

So, in honor of my friends:

AAAAAHHHH I hate that! Like, kids saying that old games didn't have good graphics because you couldn't fit the graphics on a cartridge or something. IT'S PROCESSING POWER (even if it is in a GFX card), not necessarily data storage! I don't give a flying fudge about graphics. It's game playability and streamlined(...edness?) that counts!

I especially hate when people talk about any modern electronics as if they're simple. You need a fair amount of work and brains to design something as simple as, say, one of those cheap handheld throw-in-with-a-kid's-meal game.

but... blegh.

Story and game-play are important to making a good game, but graphics sure do add the proverbial icing to the cake. So... why not have your cake and eat it too?

The fact that I like to spend hours at my PC instead of hanging out with friends, or like to listen to metalmusic all day long, or like to paint or draw, or like to solve puzzles, could qualify me as a nerd/geek, I guess.
When I was younger, I was kinda antisocial. An antisocial nerd/geek. Nowadays, I'm getting much more social. Does this mean that I'm ill?

Cheers
