Why is Dark Basic Pro Free when Dark basic Classic isnt? if you can get the pro version for free then why get the classic version for $40?

the free version of DBPro is ad supported and you can't sell the games you make with it, DBC isn't (nor is DBPro when you buy the licensed version) and you can sell the games =)

Plus, it's a good marketing strategy to release their main product for free with ads and a non-commercial license to make people want to buy the commercial license and all the expansions for it.

yeah but you know not many people will get the license because they will just wanna fool with it and mainly learn with it so i would think they would lose money because in order to use it you would have to buy it before and since it was a really popular product then alot of people bought it.

Think about the revenue from all the addons though, Dark AI, Dark Physics, the media packs etc. That should more than make up for than any loss made by releasing DBP as free. Also DGDK was promoted with microsoft due to becoming 'free' as well, think about how the boost in numbers would have been a benefit.

DB Classic has probably not been made free, because TGC want to reduce ownership of it so they can move onto other things, DBP X10 among them perhaps. Also it's near the back of the TGC product shelf now, not intended for any particular grand scheme I would imagine.

All in all though, unless you really want to buy DBC in the future, this is an everybody wins situation. TGC still make money, get more users, and the consumers are able to play around with it for no initial cost.
