Hosting a game file on your own web server would be havoc on your bandwidth usage, so what file hosting services do you recomend?

defiantly, super easy for both the uploader and downloader. no "wait 125 seconds before download starts"

200mb max upload

Thank you to both of you for replying.

What about filefront? They claim unlimited space and bandwidth here> http://www.filefront.com/developers_hosting.php

There are some hosts out there that have unlimited bandwidth. BigAdd told me his a while ago, but I forgot which one he said he used. Personally, I think it would be better in the long run to get a regular web host and use that. Even if it does have a bandwidth cap, it's going to be very hard to hit unless your running a very hot download. You also then have direct control of the presentation and your users don't have to register or wait 120 seconds to download sometimes (which I believe filefront does...). Basically, you're going to stick with their stipulations unless you get your own host.

I do have my own web host, I do a lot of work online and blowing the top off of my bandwidth is something I have done quite a few times.

Also, I think placeing the download on a site with other files / games is more opportunity for exposure.

For a freeware/demo game. Why not use some place like download.com?

It isn't really a matter of what host I use, I have had Terabyte bandwidth limits from various hosts for vaious projects in the past I mange to blow it away from time to time depending on the project. Automated cron jobs, file downloads, file uploads ect..

Hosts that claim unlimited bandwidth.. well that is a far fetched concept even if unlimited is claimed once you put a load on a server you sacrifice file transfer times and page load times.

Jerico,

Thanks, yeah I am looking into sites like that. I am just trying to find out what expierences everyone else has had with different services. A free solution on a site like download.com will be ideal for Demo versions. Full version purchases will most likely be patches / upgrades sold using services from a site like e-junkie.com

Sounds like you use your bandwidth for projects and not necessarily distribution then? I'm lost on this part, but if so, why not try a online project workspace like assembla or MS's live workspace? Just brainstorming with you
