A few months ago, I was quite careless with my laptop and installed ubuntu on it, then deleted the partitions. So yeah... :/ So all i got was a grub rescue error.

However, my bios had changed also, where it used to have a message with the keys. E.g, "Press F2 for boot menu", it didn't anymore. And when I pressed f2 (or any F for that matter) it just made a single beeping noise. I tried to install ubuntu to the harddrive through my desktop, but it wouldn't boot. So I put my laptop in a drawer and never touched it again

Any ideas as to why my bios was affected like this?

Strange. I'd just change the boot order. Check your laptop manual (if you don't have it, look online)

Yeah, i would do that, but like I said, can't get into any of the bios menus . I might just take it down some computer place and see what they can do with it.

I did the same stupid mistake...actually a phoney Linux for noobs website did it for me.

Somehow I was able to re-install windows on an external DVD drive.

Generally bios access (or advanced bios access) is hidden from the user in many laptops. Check your manual for info.

Oh right, I thought of that. I was thinking perhaps your laptop had a custom boot loader, but when you installed linux it was mucked up.

This would be very odd and retarded on behalf of the laptop manufacturer, but it would describe what you are seeing. That said, the laptop should have a proper bios configuration option before the boot loader is loaded.

It was a Toshiba Equium A200, I don't think it had a custom bootloader because I managed to dualboot vista and 7 with problems.

Anyways, thanks for the help, but I think it's time to shove it back in the drawer

Apparently you need a Boot CD from Toshiba that boots up your computer and gives you access to all files.

There's a few models in the a200 line, but according to the A200-15I manual, you press the f2 key during post to access the bios.
