Do you ask this on every forum on the internet? Because unless it's some sexual health forum or something, I can guarantee you that everyone will be obsessed with cats.

I'm not obsessed with cats.

Cats are obsessed with me

I think it's just that nobody really hates cats that much, so they tend to be fair game - safe to post about cats pretty much anywhere as Zotoaster says.

I suppose you are right, cats are pretty ok. At least they don't crap everywhere like dogs.

Who'd of thought you'd find geeks on an internet forum? And, since you did join a computer game development/programming forum; you're basically adding to the cause.

The same can be said about dogs.
And since when do other pets (like birds, for example) make better ones?
That brings us to the question: what makes a pet good?
A dog is just too energetic for me, and I HATE taking them for a walk.
A cat on the other hand, is a giant (or small) hairy creature that likes to sleep, and do things on their own. Cats like to lay on your lap, for example, something that I don't see many dogs do (maybe because a lot of them are big?).

To be honest, Dogs are better because they're social, there's more chores involved, but at least they seem thankful for your attention and seem to be more a part of the family. Birds are rubbish pets. reptiles are rubbish pets. Rats are surprisingly good pets if they're friendly. But tbh, I don't like pets, I'm never going to own one myself and will never let any future children own one, no matter how much they plead.

I don't know what type of cat you've encountered, but cats are social (at least mine is), don't have a clue what chores are, and cats are thankful for attention, and I really count my cat as part of my family, I really do!

On a side note, I really HATE, but REALLY HATE people who let their dogs crap on the sidewalk or on the grass, without cleaning it up! (Cats do it too, hence why my cat stays indoors at all times)

You're one lucky cat owner then
Every cat I've come across will avoid you and do its own thing, and when you give it attention and decide to stop for whatever reason (usually making tea) they decide to scratch your arms and legs off -.-

}:l TAKE DAT BACK!

Meh, maybe I'm biased, the cats I have now aren't that cool, but the first cat I had was amazing. We were driving to this choir practice thing, and we were at a stop light, when a cat walked in front of our car. We expected him to walk past our car but... he just lied down X_X, presumably because in front of the car was warm. So... we picked him up and took him home (he wasn't mangy, no fleas or anything). Best cat ever. We would get calls from people (our number on his collar), saying something like "Your cat has been here all day playing with our kids [one time he was playing with someone's bunny rabbit]. We can bring to your house now but... Can he stay longer?"

then he fell from a tree and died on thanksgiving

I think that the thing with cats is... they can't be pampered or over-protected, or under-protected... I think that's what causes some cats to be incredibly scared of everything, some to be incredibly isolated, etc.
Meh, it's more on a per-cat basis. Same with dogs. The only animals I could make a general statement on would be something with less intelligence, like hamsters or turtles or snakes or something (more predictable behavior)

[edit]
also, I love dogs, but reaaaally hate how they smell. I know it's not horrible, but it's like... when I pet a dog, it's fine, and then if I smell my hand, it smells like dog, and then if I wash my hand, it still smells like dog, and it smells like dog for like 4 hours.

Cats are annoying and rubbish pets because they ignore you? You wouldn't hate every person in the world just because a few of them don't pay attention to you, would you? It really just depends on the cat.

Cats tend to stay away from new people they're unfamiliar with. Once they get used to you, they'll put up with you if they have to, but they're independant animals; and could really care less of new people unless they have something to offer them (much like most people today, actually). Most cats even avoid each other when they can. On the other hand, some cats are very friendly towards strangers. Again, it just depends on the cat. Dogs look for attention and praise just about anywhere they can get it, which is why most dogs you'll find are eager to run to the door when there's a knock.

Cats also tend to look at the owner/pet relationship as an equal partnership, whereas dogs eagerly submit, and accept being the the lesser in the household. Cats won't come to you when you call them if they don't want to. And they won't let you pet them if they don't feel like it. For for the most part, dogs do as they're told.

Quote: "Every cat I've come across will avoid you and do its own thing"

Maybe cats just don't like you? I'm not trying to be sarcastic or rude; sometimes cats tend to stay away from certain people. It's just the way some of them are. Maybe they just think that people make rubbish owners so they stay away from all of them?

EDIT: Well, actually I was going to say the same thing here as Neuro Fuzzy. I like dogs, but the smell puts me off to pet most of them, and would keep me from getting one as a house pet.

Plus cats are easier to take care of. I have an evil cat, 100x easier than the dog I had about 3-4 years ago. Especially since I have no time to play. I spend all my time on this game dev forum. I know, lame, right?

But yeah, my cat is evil, and still easier to handle.

She will attack anything that moves. Even me. But only if shes in the cloak of darkness.

Yeah, you just give them some food, water, and a litterbox, and they'll pretty much take care of themselves. I had a great cat a few years ago (had her since I was around 5, she died in my arms two summers ago ). She was originally a stray, and very friendly, so we started letting her come in the house. She'd come in and say hi, sleep a little bit on the couch, and then go to the door so she could go back outside to either go to the bathroom, or hunt for food (we didn't even have to feed her )

The house cat that I have now was one of her kittens, and she's just as friendly. She jumps into my bed at night to sleep with me much like a dog would, comes by a few times during the day while I'm on the computer to say hi (she's actually here right now ); and she's just a very friendly pet. Sometimes she'll even carry her toy mouse in her mouth and bring it over to me when she wants to play.

Awww...I'm so sorry.

Quote: "The house cat that I have now was one of her kittens, and she's just as friendly."

I wish my cat was that friendly.

My cat never goes outside, but I know if it did it would kill everything. Also my cat never sits in my lap, unless I sit in the recliner with a blanket on. She prefers sitting in the sun from the windows.

I think she sleeps on my bed sometimes, but she's silent, so I would not know.

My cat is evil and will attack on sight, but most of the time I never regret getting it. I got it from a pound. It was about as big as my hand at the time. She would jump on people's back and dig her claws in. It was adorable.

Also, my cat never likes any of the toys we buy for her. Her favorite toy is a little stuffed animal we call Germy. (No idea why.) It's like a weird pink fly thing, and when she has it in her mouth she carries it everywhere and caterwauls all over the place.

But I don't want every person in the world to be my pet. =P

It might just be my opinion that a pet should be a companion and friend, and not just come to you for food and sleep.

Quote: " Maybe cats just don't like you?"

Quite possibly. It might just be my aura of cat-hater-ness. =)

Or it might be that I've only seen poorly trained cats?

Anyway, if you enjoy having a pet cat, good =) at least someone likes them =)

Quote: " The house cat that I have now was one of her kittens"

I like kittens, they're friendly and curious and rather funny sometimes. I don't like puppies though, they belt around and often smell, when my aunt got her puppy I hated going to visit her because the dog stank out her whole house and I couldn't walk anywhere without this dog running head first into my shins. -.-

You know what I hate though? When people have like 50 cats. They just smell, and can't even walk around. It's so sad.

Oh, and WHY is that?? What did they do to you???

Quote: "Dogs are superior."

No, they're not. I like them both, but as to say that dogs are superior, I would disagree. In fact, cats are far more independant than dogs are. Cats would survive living outdoors (and without the help of humans) much easier, than dogs. Dogs are more reliant on humans, which gives us the impression that they're more social or friendly than cats.

Cats and dogs are a bit like woman and men.

Before I had to move out, I had a cat. Man, that cat was the BEST friend I've EVER had! If I would have to choose between that cat and the 'friends' that I had in my life, then I would definately choose my cat! Man, that cat was really awesome! For example, when I called his name, he miaowed, or when I asked him 'do you need to go outside?' or 'are you hungry?', he miaowed too, or when I came home every morning from work, he would await me on the little road that lead to our house, or when I whent outside sitting in the sun, he would follow me and lay right beside me, or when I whent to the nearest shop, he followed me and when I told him to wait till I got back, he just stopped and waited at that same spot till I returned...!

Quote: "and when you give it attention and decide to stop for whatever reason (usually making tea) they decide to scratch your arms and legs off "

Well, I would rather be scratched by a cat, than bitten by a furious dog, ya know?

Cheers

I can't resist a good cat thread.

We've nicknamed one of our cats "Katto" (after Cato Fong) because of his habit of jumping on your back when you least expect it. He regularly ambushes me when I go upstairs to change - the second I bend down to remove my socks there he is, planted firmly between my shoulder blades. Surprisingly difficult to remove without a lot of bloodletting...

Cats IMO are a pain. They always seem to run away.

My dog is a black labrador retriever (Named Tornado) and she is the best dog. She shakes my hand, comes when i call and wouldnt hurt a fly.

Hmmm, wolves, foxes, coyote's... All dogs. You try putting a fat domesticated tabby cat outside (no not your backyard) and leave him there. He'll have just as much chance as a house dog.

Dogs are affectionate and caring. They're good friends. Cat's turn you into their slave!
