Steam has just been released for mac and as part of the launch they are offering portal for free until the 24th of May. They also have 50% off torchlight and deals on some other games. They will apparantly be releasing more mac versions of games every wednesday.

Don't forget that it's out for PC for free until the 24th as well!

Sweet. Just a shame the touchy mouse is so horrible for FPS games - apparently to right click you throw it at a wall .

Eh. I already have Portal, but Steam for Mac is awesome. I just hope they get around to doing a lot more ports in the future. These family-friendly Indie games don't really interest me.

Now that I've downloaded it and tried it, I have to say it isn't looking good. Crashes every five minutes for me.

Yeah I think I read somewhere they have alot of confirmed games for the future including all valve's big name games, CS:S HL2 .etc

Yeah sorry If I didn't make that clear

Portal was already a bargain with the Orange Box, I'd get it for free If I didn't already own it. Cool that they're expanding steam to different platforms, a linux version is also rumored. Unfortunatley I don't own a mac.

Portal being on Mac = All the Source games are on the way

(Because they must have already ported the majority of, if not all of, Source)

That's exactly what linux needs! I mean it's popular in the geek community already, the thing holding (at least m) back from using it is the lack of gaming. I'm happy to see Valve leading the charge on this one.

they should, it's sort of unfair to let people run servers on linux but they can't play the actual game... XD

Figures.... I tried downloading it and it waits until you attempt to run Steam before it notifies you its for Intel only. Bugger!

Is the flipped gradient between the overall border and the actual panel you're looking at mess with anybody else's mind?

Regardless, it's awesome. I already had Portal from an earlier Orange Box deal unfortunately, but it's still cool. I think I may get Torchlight since it's Mac-compatible and is going for $9.99 . . .

And I love how it's an easy install with just a drag to your Applications folder. Why don't more high-profile mac developers do this? I'm sure it's necessary for special configuration when installing, but a lot of the times it's used to just install crap you don't need, or could have bundled in the .app.

99% of them are drag and drop - I think the only things that aren't are codecs and.... Microsoft applications

Yeah for the little things, but for a lot of them they felt the need to use an mpkg. In addition to Microsoft, there's anything Adobe, Colloquy, and a few other big ones I use a lot.

So I guess I should have said incredibly useful & powerful apps tend to do it. So kudos to Steam for being incredibly useful & powerful, but still keeping the install simple.

And Adobe requires installations too

It's like anything that requires activation it seems. Pathfinder uses an mpkg.

If only I had the space on my HFS partition to install these. I expanded my bootcamp partition specifically because I wanted more space to install games from Steam
