Which is the best game of all time. I'm not talking about simple games like the original mario because that's too easy. think about it before you make your choice.

The best game to me is Final Fantasy VII.

Solid Snake: Unfortunately, killing is just one of those things that gets easier the more you do it.

It would be hard to pick a best game of all time, and FF VII was super good. It encouraged me to buy my first graphics card, soundcard, and gamepad for the PC! But my favorite Final Fantasy is FF VI. I experienced more emotional immersion in that game than tons of others. The heroes were all awesome(except for Gau ), the music was great, Kefka was awesomely crazy, and the style and art was spectacular.

I also really loved Secret of Mana. It had a such a neat story and the game play was pretty fun as well.

My green thumb grew the tree my Trojan War horse was crafted from. With roses in our pockets we rally round the tombstones. Ashes to ashes, we all fall down.

Matter of perspective.

Quote: "I'm not talking about simple games like the original mario because that's too easy."

I have to strongly disagree with this as a criteria though. The simplest of games were the groundbreaking, original systems of gameplay which have been tweaked and expanded on for years.

...and I nominate some random game that nobody likes simply for the purpose of seeing arguments against it and explanations of how foolish I am. Mainly because I haven't slept enough to really think about it.

I have to agree with Insanity Complex about Mario, and the simple games being the groundbreaking ones.

I still play Mario (the original NES version and Super Mario 64DS and Paper Mario) fairly often (once every six months, it seems), so I have to say any Mario game is the best. Legend of Zelda's a very close second. Obviously, I'm a Nintendo fan-boy.

I am compelled to go with Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past at this point but I reserve the right to change it.

It's definitely not FF, or any of the new Zelda's and WoW well is more of a second life to most.

This thread reminds of playing truth or dare with some person who has a crush on you but you don't like back.

"Hey, hey, hey, ask me, truth or dare."
"Uh, truth?"
"Now ask me who I like!!!"
"NO."
"Oh come ooooon."
"... who do you like?"
"You silly!"

There was a SNL (I think? Or was it lonely island) skit with an alien that did something like. Hilarious.

Anyway, totally saw FFVII coming

I'm going to go with Mario games. Mario changed civilization as we know it, and he's evolved with technology through out the years. So, what ever mario game started that change, I'll pick that.

Bioshock 2. the atmosphere and general feel is amazing, and that one moment when you swim out to see a view of the destroyed rapture, and a giant squid swims by... that was like the best scene ever.

Bioshock (original) since bioshock 2 = bioshock 1 but with a bigdaddy=P either bioshock or the whole warcraft series =P (WC1, WC2, WC3, WC3 FT, WoW, WoW TBC, WoW WotLK and now.. WoW Cataclysm)

zelda is real good aswel, Zelda OoT... i think ill go with that tbh. it had the best graphics for N64 (except for zelda MM) and had the greatest story and gameplay all time ^^ i remember when i was like 8 and played it, i kept on asking my mom what they said in the game, since iam swedish and didnt know english, and she told me, and i didnt get it hahXD

Mirror's Edge. It's so original, stylish, and thrilling. It's more like an action movie than most Shooters, and killing in it is more fun too, because when you kill someone, it really sticks, looking them in the eye from 2 feet away before you break their arms.

Arcanum is a fantastic game and there are many many more games that I really like but if I had to pick a single game as my all-time favourite it has to be Fallout 2

FFVII was overrated. The much overlooked FFVIII was 100x better in every perspective; story, battle system, mini-games, re-playability.

Anyway, best game of all time? Diablo 1 hands down. I still play it to this day.

Mario 64

There were serious concerns about how well such an iconic 2D game would stand up in the new world of 3D and it absolutely blew everything away.

I remember walking into my local console store and seeing it running on Japanese import for the first time knowing I was looking at the future of gaming.

It was the launch title for the Nintendo 64 and still regarded as the best game on the platform at the very end. Not many games can make that claim.

Everything you see these days such as Ratchet and Clank are all still trying to capture the magic of Mario 64. The only game which has come close is Mario Galaxy which is also very good.

Well, there's lots of games that I love to play, like: Crysis, Half-Life, Splinter Cell, Prince Of Persia, Blacksite, Jericho, Unreal, Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed and many many many others, but if I would have to pick one game, than I would say...tarara...BRIXOID! Whahahaha!
But, from the other games just mentioned above, I would choose between CRYSIS and HALF-LIFE.

Cheers

I couldn't pick a best game, but I can tell you my worst.

Beowulf on the Xbox 360. Annoying, unfair, unclear, awful animation, outdated. When I tried to trade it in, GAME wouldn't even take it because they said they get so many copies traded, and they sell none.

AVOID.

What i meant by simple is not the way the game was made, but simple like an easy choice. its easy to say mario is the best game, but what i meant to say was which game besides mario because mario is by far the most history changing in gaming history. my favorite mario game is super mario world. i love yoshi.

In defense of FFVII:

FFVII brought the world of RPG and showed it can work in 3d. The story was very complex, with the characters of Cloud and Sephiroth, the main hero and main villain, all having great backstories and reasons for what they are fighting for and what they try to accomplish. the levels are excellent and though graphics compared to today's game are quite "prehistoric", at the time these graphics were a breakthrough and this game would pave the way for future RPGs and other games for years to come.

Yu Suzuki's ~ Shenmue
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenmue

Developers Square (FFVII) and Sega AM2 (Shenmue), started production around the same time (1994) and though FFVII was released 2 years prior. Both have their own differences and impact on the scene. Not just towards players yet also developers them selves.
Though my personal opinion, Yu brought a whole new edge to what games are today. It may not have been a genre that got everyones attention however a title that included Face mapping, lip sync, magic weather, QTE, the list goes on and all found in a title released in 1999.

If your a dev and have a interest in a production that cost around 70 million, i can suggest the following link. 8 parts in total.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jsh8x_choj0&feature=related

Also I see many references to Shigeru Miyamoto's work, ie Mario and Zelda. He too has been a great asset to the field of game design and production.

Good thread, thankyou.

demo released.

Either one of these lot:

Dead Space
Halo: Combat Evolved
Bioshock 1
Crysis
Little BIG Planet
SPORE
Armored Core: Last Raven (Japanese) or English Wiki version

By far I think the game with the best storyline and flow is Armored Core: Last Raven, because it has multi-path scenarios and alternate endings (7 in all with a hidden one after all have been completed). I think it was the most fun to play too. Shame I've only played Armored Core 1, 2, Nexus, Nine Breaker and Last Raven, I heard AC2:AA and AC3 were good.
