I just played the demo twice and here is my review.
The Good:
- Custom Menu
Very professional. The loading screen really got my attention.
- General Ambience
Everything fits together well to create an air of desolation. No cheap effects like blood and body parts around every corner, just a grungy place that looks belivable real.
- Player Speed
It seemed to me that player speed was drastically reduced which is good since in RL anybody would walk around such a place very cautious.
- Creepy NPCs
The guy crossing the corridor is pretty overused but the one where you could only see the legs was cool. I didn't even recognize the model at first which did stir my attention.
The Bad:
- Entities used
Most fit together perfectly but are overused. On the other hand the boxes and lockers in the 2-level-high room did not fit and spoiled it somehow. The planks and corrugated iron sheets looked out of place.
- Flashlight
The whole place has very good lighting but turning on the flashlight completely wastes that. Unfortunately there is no reason to ever turn it off again.
- Lack of Story
Ok, its just a demo but the whole level feels a little dull. There is nothing that gives a hint where the player is, how he did get here or what has happened so there is no real motivation.
The Ugly:
- Ghost Train
Having the player run into a dead monster for thrills is ok...but playing a "shock" sound in addition is cheap
On my personal demo scale it's a 2.5 out of 5 and I'd call it "a solid basis to continue"
On a sidenote I'd like to add that it's really refreshing to play a demo that gets along without the "get weapon - shoot zombie" routine
