@budokaiman He asked if there was any FREE programs. Jeez, how can you afford that stuff? :/

I suggest just using something like PageBreeze, i used it for a while. Its okay, but if you want something good expect to pay a reasonable amount.

Check out KompoZer It's an update of the program Nvu, which I used years ago and found to be sufficient.

It depends, because he may want a custom design that fits the needs of him more than wordpress can.

I suggest trying all of the options we have posted and then see whats right for you

Perhaps. Hopefully legally if he does...

Joomla.org for a website software that provides more features. Wordpress is by far easier to use though.

If you're a student you might be eligible for dreamspark, in which you can download visual web developer or expression studio (or both) for free:

Blue Voda

Its fairly decent, free and more WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) and it saves in a bvp format which is the format used by Vodahost the company that build this tool but you don't have to sign up for their hosting, the software has a 'get html' function and just copy and paste the code, I haven't used it in a while but for free I think you should definetly check it out. On the site it says to give email to get a link for download, its not a scam they will give you the link, but they will also sign you up for their newsletter to promote their company but you can unsuscribe, there's a link at the bottom of every email they send you to unsuscribe. All in all its fairly decent and worth a look.

000webhost is pretty decent. If you need free hosting try them.

As for the people suggesting notepad, this is probably the hardest option for the guy. He wants to make a quick simple website not learn how to code

The express edition of Visual Studio is free, just get Visual Web Developer 2008 Express.

Fool of a took!

The only thing you really need is Syntax Highlighting and Code Completion. Any WYSIWYG editor will be naff (to the extreme), as the code it will generate will be horrible.

Try something like NetBeans. It supports Javascript, html and php.

You can easily make your own templates for WP or just plug it into an existing site.

WP is a good option or just find a simple WYSIWG free web host there are alot of them.

I always liked Crimson Editor. It has customizable syntax highlighting, FTP, and you can make macros that execute batch files. A while ago I used it as a replacement for ide for DBC since the global variable syntax for DarkEdit (and the other one whose name I can't remember now) was borking.

Or, if you're on Mac, TextWrangler.

I've always used Notepad++, if you want to learn to code as well as make a website, us his.. It is easy to use, collapsible and expandable lines, syntax highlighting and more. If you want to make good and easy ,custom, websites though, you will need to fork out a bit of cash unfortunately.

^ This, with regards to its built in FTP which it can invoke automatically every time 'Play' [preview] is pressed. Used it quite recently for a PHP/MySQL assignment and it worked brilliantly in every aspect (PHP + HTML + JS with ExtJs + FTP etc.)

HTML-Kit is good, that's what i use. It has syntax highlighting, A Preview screen and probably a lot of other features that i don't know about.

I hate WYSIWYG editors, they always include so much un-need junk.

Ditto. I was updating my professor's website for him recently, and a previous student of his had built the layout 5-10 years ago using an old version of Dreamweaver, and it had generated the most obnoxious table layout I have ever had the misfortune to work with. Not that I do a lot of web design, it's just I've gotten so used to working with templates and layouts using the nice new CSS conventions on my own sites.

I also agree with NetBeans. We use it at work extensively because it has embedded support for Symfony

Sorry, I know everyone has their preferrences, but I must defend wordpress.org (not to be confused with wordpress.com), it has become more than a blogging system in the last couple years and the plugin directory has everything you would ever need as far as functionality for your site goes. As for design, there are loads of free and premium designs. If they don't fit your fancy just make your own theme and never have to touch the code again.

As far as free hosts go, I don't bother with them. Somethings you just gotta pay for if you want usability. Hostgator's cheapest plan is around 7 bucks a month I believe and their customer service is awwesome. Please dont use yahoo or GoCrappy, you will regret it in the long run.

Notepad++ is my preference, unless websphere is involved then I'm on Eclipse.

For simple web sites I wouldn't bother with Netbeans, way too much overhead I think. I primarily only use it for Java stuff.

Although, that is a handy feature, especially when FileZilla sucks so much on Mac.

With these programs like dreamweaver, do you still have to manually format the page with tables? I can never get my head around that, and that's how i ultimately gave up on php.

If you're after a standalone FTP client Cyberduck does an O-K job

I don't care for cyberduck's minimal interface.

Mad Nightmare, probably don't want to design your whole page using tables anyway.

GoDaddy's nice, but you can get a better customer experience elsewhere. (Their website is the worst designed I've ever had the misfortune to use. It's like their site is designed to cross-sell, without giving you an easy way to manage or buy the service you intended), but their service itself and the customer service was good. Their shared webhosting is kinda odd if you've ever hosted with someone else, it's not as intuitive as a stock CPanel account.

That said, places like spidahost.com for shared hosting or prgmr.com for VPS hosting are better alternatives.

PRGMR.com is nice because you have full root access to your own virtual private server. However, you need the knowhow to set it up on your own. You also need to be able to use puttygen and putty to create the keys needed and login to your server. If you do go that route, make sure you buy at least the $8/mo plan for webhosting. You'll need the 256mb RAM for even a minimal PHP based website with a control panel like virtualmin running in the background. If you plan on using SSL (https), you should probably go for the $12/mo plan.

I'm loving my Dreamhost account. Their control panel is relatively easy to navigate, and they let you host subversion repos in addition to your website, file backup, and email accounts.

What OS would you install on a prgmr VPS?

I think anti-WYSIWYG proponents are missing one very important thing: Dreamweaver and similar packages do a lot more than generate code. I use Dreamweaver as a code editor, with the added benefits of having a visual representation, a direct FTP-connection to the website itself and various debugging options that check the code validity against the engines of most major browsers.

I still keep track of the code and make sure to indent it properly. Besides, the amount of redundancy is usually connected to browser backward compatibility and is entirely optional. If you know your Dreamweaver, I can almost guarantee that you work more effectively -- and faster -- than anyone that's staying with Notepad.

Whatever one you need for the software you'll be running.

I prefer debian. Virtualmin prefers it too. Zarafa (for awesome email support, if needed) supports it too. But Steam has the best documentation and support for Ubuntu it seems.

Ubuntu's not my favorite, as out of the box, it's a pain to use at the command line.

Fedora (among others) uses Selinux which I guess makes things more secure. Some software may dislike it (which is probably a bad thing security wise for said software).

Try not to use tables, divs are much more flexible. As far as browser comparability, try using a css reset either make your own or use a pre made one like the one that comes with the 960.gs
