Greetings, DB'ers.

I'm in the process of developing a new 3D modeler called JTEdit. You can download an alpha-quality preview release for free from http://www.jtgame.com/jtedit.

Because JTEdit supports the DirectX .x format, both skinned mesh and segmented frame versions, even though I was mainly writing it for use with my own JTGame development environment, I thought it might be useful for those like yourselves who can use the .x format. In fact, I probably expect there will be a lot more non-JTGame users, so I will try to give the .x format good support.

Note that by "alpha-quality" I mean there are still lots of bugs in it, and I publish it thusly with fear and trepidation, but I feel it may still be usable, and would like to get some feedback. I'd especially like to hear if my implementation of the .x format works for you, as I am not a DB user, and thus haven't tried it with DB.

Therefore, if you are brave, and trying out early release software is not too painful for you, please give it a spin. Meanwhile I'll continue bug-fixing and improving it.

Thanks.

Cool... this is gonna take a little getting used to, and used it for about 5mins noticed that the Camera Eye does something odd. I mean i click and move about but it just ruins the ZDepths of the objects for a second and the whole screen goes blank - guessing its a little sensitive
lemme play for a while longer and i'm sure i can get a better feel for it

The Camera Eye or "View Camera Tool" is for browsing in a world. You probably want to use the Model camera, which is better suited for looking at models. Right-click the camera tool button an select Reset Camera help if camera gets lost.

You're right in that JTEdit will take some getting used to. It's not that easy to use, but provides some powerful control. I recommend running through the First Use and Skinned Mesh Finger tutorials.

Kensupen,

Thanks for the info. Here's something to try, a an axcerpt from the User's Guide:

----
JTEdit's Instability and Mucked up Workspaces

I'm ashamed to say that JTEdit has bugs, and these bugs may involve mucking up the workspace file, particularly if JTEdit has crashed while exiting. If starting up JTEdit (automatically loading the last documents edited) or loading a document causes JTEdit to crash, the first thing to try is to delete the associated workspace files.

If this doesn't work, try deleting the JTEdit.jtc file (in the bin directory where JTEdit.exe is).

If it still doesn't work, open the registry editor regedit or regedit32, find the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JT Software\JTEdit key, and delete it.

Because of JTEdit's instability, I recommend you save your document often during your editing sessions.
---

If it seems that a particular model is causing it to crash, could you send me a copy so I can debug this?

Clearly, I need to work on an automatic recovery mechanism.

Thanks for letting me know, as no one but you and Raven have given me any feedback.

It's not be clear from the previous message that the workspace file is the .jtw file that gets created in the same directory as the model file.

Also, to those of you who have downloaded and tried out JTEdit, please drop me a line about your experience. This will be a great help to me in improving it.

are you using the standard MFC Registeration setup?
I'm still having fun checkin' out the features, definatly once you get used to the setup its fun.

See about making a buglist for ya to squish the lil buggers (^_^) ... or ofcourse tell me it isn't a bug its a feature hehee

>standard MFC Registration
As in a .ini or registry entry for keeping configuration data? I'm not. JTGame's object system has the means for streaming in or out object data, so it was convenient for me to use this mechanism, i.e. just stream the configuration object in or out.

Please do make a bug list. If you like, JTEdit has its own forum with a thread for posting bugs. See it at http://www.xsorbit4.com/users/JTGame. I also maintain a buglist on the JTEdit web site at [url]http://www.jtgame.com/jtedit/jteditbugs.html, though I only update it at release time. Of course, feel free to email me directly too. You can post here too, while this thread is small, though I worry the DB folks might not like me taking too much space here.

Meanwhile, I'm working on a new feature, a tool for assigning meshes to frames. While working on the segmented frame tutorial, it was obvious that this area could be made more convenient. I also revised the joint tool to display a tree instead of a flat list box, and fixed a few bugs along the way. I'll probably refresh the release next week, once I finish the segmented frame tutorial.

Anyway, thanks for helping!

I've just put up a new JTEdit release with a finished segmented frame modeling tutorial and some bug fixes and improvements. I also just got a long list of issues from a friend of mine, so there's more polishing to come.

I really need help finding all the problems in JTEdit, so please do let me know how it goes for you if you try it out.

Again, you can download JTEdit for free from http://www.jtgame.com/jtedit.

Oops, I let slip a major regression in a refresh of the download image I made yesterday (Tues 24 Nov 2002). I messed up the transform tools in operating on a selection. If you downloaded then, please download again. sorry for the inconvenience.
