Impressive, but there are still some mistakes and annoying bits of punctuation. Typing is the way to go

Perhaps, but you have not "trained" it close to your voice. LOL

I hate speech recognition with a passion for two reasons:

1. Its not a perfected technology, so it takes longer to speak it than it does to just do it it. "Open Microsoft Word"..... "Spoken my bird?" Unknown command...

2. All the people living next door will think you are a crazy person, and using speech recognition in public just silly, you feel like a fool.

I'm all for it for phones, so you say "Bob", or "mum" and it will bring up the number, that usually works pretty well.

But for opening a program, its just a bit OOT.

When its perfected (ie. You don't have to say "INSERT COMMA" every few words) it will be brilliant for dictating!
The computer just needs to improve the grammar analysis of a person's speech. I shouldn't have to tell it to insert a question mark or a comma etc..

I agree with BigAdd on pretty much everything.
Using it to generally navigate your computer is counter-productive but dictating an essay or a blog post (when the technology is good enough) would be a massive time saver. I mentioned in another post that i dictate my thoughts down into my phone from time to time so it would be nice to have something that instantly puts it down instead of having to transcribe it or listen to my voice drone on for an hour.

Is anyone else thinking of the scene from Star Trek IV with Scotty talking to the computer from the 80s?

Check out this WIP flash game from the Global Game Jam!

Scotty talks straight at the computer
"Computerrrr..., computerrrr."
Bones hands Scotty a computer mouse,
Scotty holds it up to his mouth,
"Computerrr...."

Keyboards? How quaint...

I've always found speech recognition (whether it be on my phone or whatever) annoying, as I can usually do what I want it to do quicker than it takes me to say it. I understand how it could be useful if you're using a headset or something though.

I have not tried it since dragon 5. My boss got a newer one and some top of the line digital recorder that is supposed to help when it comes from the recorder over live. I will stick to typing, though if I said I was using speech rec I could use that as an excuse for my constant mistakes.
