so i am going to install windows 7 right now so i can check out my radeon 5870 in its full glory. What are some of the things i should get/dowload for the OS to have it run at its best. Or just anything that i should know about the OS since i used nothing but windows XP since i was 12. also what are some games to test my card on?

I am probably going to get stick for this, but nothing.
I have not optimized Windows 7 since i've had it and have had no problems with it, it's always ran quickly with no hiccups. If you want to squeeze that little bit of speed out of it you can do the usual tweaks of turning off the active previews, aero, gadgets, min/max animations and transparency.

Actually, turn transparency off anyway, because its bloody useless.

Obviously get your spunky new Dx11 drivers and i would recommend getting Desktops from the official Microsoft sysinternals website. It allows 4 virtual desktops and is probably the quickest one i've tried, the rest of the sysinternal software is also pretty good so take a browse around.

As for games, the first game i tried with Dx10 features was Bioshock, just seeing the small, but very noticeable water effect changes completely sold me. Far Cry 2 would be another good choice, then try something on a bigger scale, like supreme commander or another large scale RTS.

I'm not even going to mention trying crysis, because everyone else will probably say the same thing...

..wait, I just did.

Well you need to install the important things like Framework and Physx if the game requires it. I suggest disabling the security UAC system to stop bugging you and install Windows XP Luna theme to make it look like good old XP.

make sure you do a complete install, none of that vista upgrade crap... it doesn't work out too well...

yeah i did. Seems like Crysis isnt running too well on all very high settings after all. A lot of choppiness and delays during cutscenes and places with lots of action, but i dont think my 5870 isnt good enough, its proboly because i have a pentium D 3.4 ghz (dual core) and 2 gigs of ram. Im gonna upgrade the ram first see if it makes any diffference.
