hey everyone, i wanted to ask you advice and opinions on something, i've been looking into DX11 compatable cards and getting one would really be my only reason for upgrading to windows 7, so i wanted to ask if anyone who's doing the same as me or someone who has a DX11 card, which they think is the best for the price. i'm aware of the ati radeon 5770 (i think thats it) and its capabilities but at the moment i'm more wanting a 480 or and 400 series from nvidia as they've met my every need, as far as graphics go, now i had another question i use vista and recently did a dxdiag and notcied that i had directx 11 installed which confused me as i thought that 7 was the only current OS that used dx11 and i use a GTX295 and i wasn't sure if it was able to use dx11, i mainly wanted to ask, do ihave dx11 or is just basically dx10.2 or something, in other words should i be needing to upgrade any time soon or can it wait a year or 2, thanks

the gtx 295 is a fantastic card. I'd wait a couple of years until the dx 11 hardware is cheaper and there is more software to warrant its purchase.

I agree with mnemonix but if you wish to upgade to dx11 now (which i reccomend you do) the HD5770 is brilliant if u are using 19' - 21.5' but any bigger screen i reccomend the Hd5850 or Hd5870 if you want to play at good resolutions. oh and no the gtx 295 is not conpatible with dx11

Intel core I7 980x OC 5Ghz (6 core OMG) MSI Big Bang Fusion, Asus Radeon HD5970 + PNY GTX295 (GTX480 as soon as realesed), 2x 120gb OCZ Vortex,
16gb Corsair Dominator DDR3 RAM.

The GTX295 will do a great job for another 2 years atleast. DirectX 11 gives almost no improvements over DirectX 10 so I recommend to stick with DX10 and the GTX295 until DX11 is more widespread.

I can't even comment how wrong you are.
Well here in NZ you can get DX11 cards for around 80 bucks. Which is like 60 USD!!!

That DX11 card you listed is the worst gaming GPU you can ever buy. Almost no games support DX11 so drop the idea.

The GeForce 465 was just released for $279 I think. I would wait until the price goes down though.

It is not the worst gaming GPU you can buy. Its the worst DirectX11 GPU you can buy for sure.
Nearly all the new games support Direct X11 and if you develop in DirectX its pretty good to have a compatible card that can run what you make. And if you are going to make a AAA quality title. Direct x9 seems to 'noob' for most gamers tastes these days.

Right now? Sort of. Will they all? You bet. There's some amazing technology in DX11. A few games of mention that use DX11 are Alan Wake, Supreme Commander 2 and Crysis 2.

As for the card itself, I can't speak on that. My words of wisdom would be to wait, unless your a serious developer.

DX11 enables threaded rendering, compute shaders and HW tessellation. Nothing is going to require these features for a long old time. I would not bother worrying over DX11 a whole lot yet. Until XP is completely dead a lot of developers aren't going to be putting a lot of effort into Vista/7 exclusive technologies, which includes DX11

DX10 support already exists in a lot things but DX9 still outnumbers it by far.

It is also very likely that by the time anything requires DX11 (or its features), DX11 itself will already be obsolete/superseded.

Alan Wake is on 360 only
