Is there any interest in a mobile version of this website? I started working on one for the iPhone this morning, so far it'll display all boards and threads (first page only), but the thread when displayed is only being pulled from 1 specific thread at the moment.

http://zimnox.com/tgc/

No login, so from the main screen just click the link for Guest. To allow login and writing replies, TGC would have to host it on their end, which I'm willing to write it if they want.

Wow that's actually really cool IMO. I like the way it keeps the iPod theme.

How do you manage to retrieve the data from the forum without being able to access the database?

php just grabs the rendered page then uses a dom parser. Not too difficult for a quick example. Although, this forum has way too many nested tables.

I don't have the thread ID linked into the hyperlinks yet

Pretty awesome!

Would it work on any mobile device, like the iPod Touch? Or is this specifically going to be for the iPhone?

Either way, I hope TGC will ask you to do something with this.

Being that the iPod touch is essentially the same as an iPhone it will work fine on the iPod Touch

This look so cool! Was hoping we'd get a mobile version of the forum!

That's good news for when I buy my iPod Touch later this year.

@Phaelax and TGC:

PLEASE develop this further! It would be awesome to be able to access this forum from all WiFi-friendly places.

I recommend you wait until either before September (Apple usually have an iPod event and launch new iPods here) as prices for current iPods will most likely drop. Otherwise wait until after for the better an improved iPod Touch...

I've updated it a little, you should be able to see threads for any topic now. Wasn't as hard to parse the links as I thought. And I finally figured out how to grab the inner html of tags, which previously returned all text but removed their respective element tags. A few more CSS updates and it'll look even better.

Due to the width limits of phones, I've decided to move the author's information you normally see to the left of each post and post the minimal info at the top of each response.

Oh, and if my avatar is displayed in place of a google ad, I didn't do that on purpose! It's just whoever posted last before the ad is displayed.

The site is designed with the iPhone in mind, so essentially your new iPod would work the same. As for other smart phones, it'll work but I can't guarantee how well it will look. The framework I'm using was developed with the iPhone in mind, and thus the webkit engine in Safari. Some styles are specific to that browser while others rely on CSS3 which other mobile browser may not support yet. Android phones probably use Chrome and thus webkit so I would guess it'd be ok on those. I could write a separate site for any mobile device which is not detected as an iphone.

Just went to it on my iPod and it works very well, ussually on the normal site I have to scroll way to the side to see the complete post. I think it is a great design, good work

Did you a banner if you are interested!

Surprised TGC haven't made something like this already, considering their interest in iPhone apps.

Fixed.

Made some CSS updates; quotes are now displayed properly as well as code snippets and signatures. Local Apollo avatars should also show up now.

That is pretty brilliant actually. Anything that allows iPhone stuff so I can use it easier in work is top rated for me. Oh and incase you are looking for any bugs, I noticed it doesn't show smileys.

Hopefully TGC go with this. Otherwise hopefully you will keep it available as an on the go viewer as it is much better than using any of the browsers with the official site. Nothing wrong with it but it's all a little too wide to be nice.

Oh, and if I was you I would make it so when you bookmark it on the iPhone to add it to the home screen, that the picture is better. I think the iPhone uses a portion of the top left corner as the icon, and on my one it looks a little naff (washed out for starters).

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing
