Coder girls don't exist, really. If they do, then they don't exist for long - they soon discover girly things to waste their time on.

Face it. Programmers are alone in this earth, even programmers tend not to go looking to make friends with other programmers, female or not. I just don't think that human beings care all that much about communication with real people anymore. We have FaceBook so we don't need 'real' friends anymore, real friends are inconvenient. And programmers tend not to be picky, really it's a matter of finding someone who will put up with a programmer, never mind being on 'wavelengths' or any of that twaddle.

I know of 1 female coder, who actually does still code, and she's cool, but it's a pretty depressing life if you sit waiting on a remotely 'perfect' girl. See this Avril Lavigne, doesn't-know-shes-hot, intelligent and funny perfect woman is a myth. If you can find a girl cool enough to let you code, then marry her immedietly. Programmers are actually pretty uncomplicated beings I think, we do the complicated stuff so there's no need for life to be any more complicated than it has to be.

Well, the most popular guy in our school codes, and he has got a gf for over 1 year now. So I guess the combination is possible. I don't know if she codes, but atleast she lets him.

Well, she is pretty, right? Not bad for a coder girl. If they all would be like that, don't you agree? Yeah man! Mwuahahahaaa!

Oh yes, they do. When I was doing a programming course a year ago, there where 4 girls in my class and only 5 guys. And, I can assure you that those girls knew how to code! Even better than some of the guys. I still have contact with one of them, and she's still as computerminded as then.

Cheers

When you guys actually finish school and gets jobs in depressing IT offices developing your .NET web apps for whichever company you work for, and generally being a slave to the man, you will find your office will have plenty of female coders. I'd wager, 5-10% of the programmer work force in the UK are female. I've worked with loads, and they have all been normal people.

There's a stigma attached to it, until you get to uni, and then you can be someone who enjoys programming, and still get to have sex. Yes, it's true. Your lives aren't over.

I program, and I have a girl friend... who is hot. When I mention how cool it is to read Valve summit slides, or try to explain the inner workings of pathfinding, she just gives me this smile, and says "...oh, Im going to go do insane calculus."

@Van B

yah man thats right.. not only that but sometimes the girl will
think your to smart for them. Or thats even with friends they will
think your smarter then them. once I meat a person and they ask me
what im doing later today, I tell them Im design a program for
some reason music, AI, col dec... ect there like ow whats that,
and I let them know what im saying and everything from there is a
compo with them. Be smart in a stupid way, milkshape a girl a flower
and dont let her know its for her. I mean I find ways just like programing, find a way to get the job done. ow and work out be like some buff nerd super man programmer. bust out with some p90x, (pound some beers)j/k and some girl will hit you up. Girls want a guy to get them out of a thinking situation and a physical situation. kick some ass! hahaaha all in all code for not only yourself, involve the femal so make her some programs that are nice then she wont think programing is such a waist of time. thats my thought anyways.

Quote: "Quote: "I hate rap but this will pass."

yah still like to listen to them, them and MEGADETH!

and to all of you who met coder girls, im talking about a girl
that would rather spend her extra cash on a new GPU or CPU. Not the
lame ones who spend there money on something so people can stare at them when they once a week walk through the mall. one who respects the new and latest in computer tec. one when it comes to buying a car not the fanciest car but the most economical, one who likes watching science other then a football game or sex in the city, one who likes whine and not bud-lite, one who ... ok im going a little to far but you all get the point right.

Heh, NO girl at my school programs out of school (that I know of... and i've asked around). Actually... sad... girl from my programming class... we broke up yesterday

It's annoying though. No girl at my school programs out of school (and I've looked), no girls are in the math club, a few girls in it for the social or college app aspects are in the science olympiad club. That's it.

All I'm looking for is a girl who I can discuss stack overflows and concurrent modification exceptions and matrix diagonalization with at 2:00 AM somewhere outside! Is that so much to ask?

it's okay IMO for girls to enjoy girly stuff too, I still like them if they're into my type of things. most guys like foot ball for instance. let's look at it this way, if a girl was marrying a guy because he loved shoe shopping, I think she would understand if he wanted to watch football sometimes, same way if I had a nerdy "coder girlfriend" I would understand if she wanted to get her nails done, or go shopping with her girl friends.

In my electronics class, theres 1 girl and about 11 guys. We have to program for that, but she (and everyone else except me and another guy) have no idea about programming.
The other day she was trying to get a pieso sounder to make a noise with a frequency that starts at 100 and moves to 300 and she hard coded every frequeny. I told her how to your 'for to' loops but she ignored me that annoyed me oh, and I wouldn't say that shes attractive

Thanks,,,

I know plenty, what of it?

And of course they'd be girly...they're girls, sure I know a share of Tomboys, but even they're girly, after all wearing perfume and putting on make-up isn't very boy-ish, unless of course you're Eddie Izzard. Even the manliest of girls I've known have still been girly and I swear she was growing facial hair, I mean, she went bloody squiggly at a teddy bear. Mind you, if you were to ever hold one...the happy that shines through you, it's amazing...but hanging around with a couple of certain individuals has completely destroyed my masculinity, but hey! At least I have my digni- no I don't. (Note to self, don't post at 4:30 am, posts lower in sanity, thank you, good night)

It amuses me how surprised people are that geek or nerdy girls exist. Some are freaking awesome, others less so...I think we might have been through this one over a thousand times.

A few years ago I had some help for the summer at work, MD's daughter studying some crazy astro-physics degree. Anyway I taught her Excel, VBA, and Paint. The most useful to her out of those was the Paint training - badly drawing icons and buttons that I never used in the end. She's a geek, but not into computers very much at all - anyone dating her better have a big... telescope. The geekier girls I know are all into reading and obscure thrash bands.

Thing is, how many of you have dated or are dating a female programmer?

See, my overall theory is that programmers are arrogant to the point that having a GF who's better at programming (or possibly anything) is a non-starter. Imagine that - ''Rub my feet luv, while I trace that memory leak - and look at your code, why is it always in such a mess - you think I've nothing better to do but tabulate?.''
By arrogant, I mean I think that's what makes a programmer in the first place - it takes a certain mindset to want to have that much control over something as complex as a computer. Programmers are binary creatures, they either love something or hate it, with a RND(10)=1 chance of changing their mind. I have yet to meet a geek who thinks something is just ok - usually OK means ''I hate it but I'm being polite, but stay tuned because I might change my mind.''
I think getting 2 programmers together would be like breeding Pandas, only more frustrating. You have to consider the long term as well, what if your other half believes in BlitzMax, how would you raise the children!.

I kinda see your point Van, and I think there is some truth in it. My girlfriend goes to uni (yeah, I am a cradle snatcher) and is studying computer science. She's always banging on about how much fun it was to set up that dual boot, or do some bash scripting etc. Yawn! Over the summer she works for IBM (that how I met her, in fact) as a developer. Basically, it's fair to call her a coder.

She's actually strong willed and quite opinionated too. So there's some truth in your hypothesis! However, she is still a girl. By that I mean, she can be quite fickle and change her mind, or make rash decisions without thinking them through. I remain the voice of reason, and the logical brain. Therefore, we don't really have any battles of arrogance. It is just accepted I am superior in every way ... except breast size.

Insert piccy sig here. Eh? Why didn't that work?!?! Must ring help-a-noob. What was the number again? .... where am I?

So very true, programmers have meticulous minds, we feed on the complexity of our jobs. Getting two people together with that mindset could set off a mental bomb or something like that. And who would date someone that supports blitz .

My girlfriend is what you might call a party girl if you saw her out at night, but also has a Masters degree in electronic engineering, which is cool, because I always get to explain my code to her and she somehow understands. Geeky girls do exist, and they can be hot and cool too.

I dated one several years ago. Man, she was hot, pretty, smart and loved to program! She had long black hair and she did pole fitness too!
We had some great conversations about binary code.
Unfortunately she left me for some rich guy.
Later I found out that they broke up. Mwuahahahaaa!
I believe that having programming as a mutual interest in a couple can be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on the way you can deal with it in a relationship. And, that counts for everything else in a love affair.

I cannot agree.
I have to say that all 'coder girls' that I've met were great at their jobs, and most of them were something nice to look at.

You'll find best 'coder girls' in international projects. And I can tell that some of them look like out from a dream. Gorgeous and intelligent, many lead groups of programmers. Not a myth, they do exist, and they are quite professional as well as pretty.

I think want Van was implying was that they have to not know they're hot, because if they do, they wouldn't look at you twice.

... and why should they? Looking at someone twice is a waste of time. You don't pay your taxes twice. You don't drive to work twice (unless you forget your brief case) and you certainly don't eat your dinner twice, unless you're a sick dog.

Point proven! I rest my brief case.

Being your girlfriend must be magical.

It’s interesting that the word “girl” has been used thirty-nine times, so far, (not including the title, quotes, or being used in “girlfriend“ or “girly“) and the word “woman” has only appeared twice.

Are you guys really that intimidated?

Quote: "Are you guys really that intimidated?"

Its not intimidated and its not about a girl doing a mans job... its about having the girl of your dreams!

mate

The only girls I have met that are close to nerds is a girl telling
me she is a nerd.. "because ect", I cant wait to meet the girl
that creates a robot that can clean the house wash dishes or even make me a sandwich! now thats a nerdy girl being a girly girl!

A woman appears, I wonder how long it'll be before people will start trying to impress her?

However, at the risk of being shot for being sexist, but then it amuses me:

Quote: "I cant wait to meet the girl
that creates a robot that can clean the house wash dishes or even make me a sandwich!"

Wouldn't she be out of a job?

I tend not to survive long after making sexist jokes, I'm sure I've been slapped before.

Well to better understand, men make robots that can carry stuff, break stuff, paint stuff .. ect, Men are not out of a job. Ow and I have been slapped before... The woman would just become a supervisor just like men become one.

And a bit of advise it is best to not try to attempt or even think of
trying to attempt to impress a woman. Be dedicated to what you do, and theres always room for a man to be sexist same for the woman. Theres a bit of everything as so long as it dose NOT include someone else!
