So, this may be the wrong place (I mean sports on a Geek board?!) but hey, what about Soccer?
Is anyone here interested in what's going on at the World Cup in South Africa?
I just came home from Public Viewing about an hour ago and my team (Germany) just ripped Australias team apart with a blazing 4:0! Lots of celebration going on and this was just the first match in the tournament! This is gonna be one hell of a summer! ( with lots of the finest German beer ! )
But wait - is it true that TGC is a company from England?? Damn, I better get out of here - they may be pissed after England only played a 1:1 against USA (known for soccer fame haha).

Now the plot thickens, the fps decreases, and the awesomeness goes through the roof.

The USA are miles better than Australia. They got to the quarter finals last world cup.
Germany were very good nonetheless.

Australia in not a strong soccer side, We are more into Rugby League and Aussie Rules. The only time we sit down to watch a soccer match is when the world cup is on. Have to blame the loss on something .

So what's USA's next game?

And how does this tie thing work, what if it's like the final game and there is a tie?(every other sport I know has overtime)

Being Australian, I watched the match against Germany this morning. The result was what I expected.

Yeah same here. I wanted to think Australia would win but it wasn't likely. Still down but not out yet.

I suppose that this is where I'm supposed to put some witty one liner. Well...sorry to disappoint.

Soccer is an english word, not some thing the Yanks made up, so stop complaining that they call it soccer, or they might start using "Association football".

I don't think it's the fact it's a US English word (as it isn't) - but more the fact they're using 'football' to describe something other than what we know as football (so using football and soccer for different things is kind of a bastardisation of the words)

No, we're still on a high from 1966, which most of us don't recall from being too young or not yet born. However, if you ask, we all played our part!

I tried watching the US - England game but found myself counting the number of green shirts in the stands. It was like watching a game of professional keep away. Until the US can get it's top athletes to come to soccer over the major US sports they will never be as good as they could be.

I hope England drop out early this year, mainly because that means that Tesco will have to stop selling those pathetic little flags and plates. Basically my desire to lose at football is fuelled by my hate of Tesco.

Holland had a terribly mediocore game today, won 2-0 against Denmark but not in convincing style. I hope they get Arjen Robben back on the pitch, and switch out van der Vaart for Elia on the starting roster.

Here's your football thread.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

We(Australia) got flogged! 4-0! I can't believe it. I made a bet that we would lose 4-1! Damnit.

i dont get the fuss about soccer vs football
doesnt matter imo, i still get what they mean so whats the problem?

and i believe football is a... sissy sport, acually i dont like sport at all, but i dont like watching men hunting a football to kick it...
i prefer icehockey but i rarely watch that either, i just like the fact that there is more going on in there than football :3

oh and sweden ftw!! i know sweden is pretty good at both football and icehockey, maybe just the second one? bah sweden ftw!!

I don't understand why some people don't like sport. It's usually just ignorance or bitterness at not being athletic. Not saying that you are Quik but I find intellectuals the most bitter people.
There is a lot of strategy and interesting variations in sport, especially football, so I find it strange that computer programmers are generally not interested. Football is a lot like chess if you think about it.

iam mostly not interested because well.. i dont know why, i am a computer geek but i have nothing against sport in general, i for example love something close to baseball (close, not the same) dunno the real name of it though, and i love simply just fysical excersize, iam just not a fan of football and hockey :S

okay, so i havent excersized at all this year, i totally ditched excersize at school, and i regret it (which is why i will excersize at school next year)

maybe i should've mentioned this in my prev post?

Whilst I do find sport (spectatorship) interesting, I can understand the angle of disliking sport. Mainly because it creates so much anger and competition for something which, at the end of the day, is a completely pointless artificial construct. Sometimes that competition can be really positive (national unity / rallying behind a team or even a set of teams) but often it ends up as being negative (hating national team X because of long standing national history)

That and the fact that sports people tend to be better recognised than politicians, scientists, doctors etc. - which is pretty backward in terms of contribution. Unsurprising - but backward.

Yeah, funny actually, I kept expecting one of the Austrailian players to rugby tackle Klose.

Did anyone watch the New Zealand game? They might as well have played Rugby the way they were playing! But they got there first ever world cup point!

On the geek/sport thing im pretty busy. Im on my pc gaming, and designing, but once a day im out biking(BMX), playing a few games of football, tennis, and some golf too(the pleasure of hitting something very hard) Pretty much everyone where i live plays football, its just the thing here, street football can be found in every street pretty much.

I was quite impressed with DPRK the other day, holding out for over 55 minutes before Brazil scored. The final score was 2-1, and they should be quite proud of themselves
