so today my famous Corsair PSU 620W with super high quality parts, military grade copasitors from Japan, life expectancy at least 15 years, triple protection against brounouts and stuff a 5 year warranty died. When i turned it on today, it started crackling inside and then it wouldnt turn on any more. I bought this powersupply because it was claimed to be the best of the best. All the high wattage PSUs with the highest rating on newegg are corsairs. i paid 120 bucks for it and this is the famous quality i get (worked for 1 month). then i look closley at the revies, out of 1000, 100 are negative reviews for corsair PSUs. the other PSUs are not very popular and very little user reviews on them. This got me thinking, are Corsair PSUs really as good as they say they are or are they just popular because of the corsair brand? What PSUs are truly high quality? Ive been eying the "toughpower" psus latley and they seem to be a real good piece. but i just dont know. Anyone have any good quality PSU reccomendations?

If you overran the PSU, nothing can save you.

If you're well under spec, it was just a bad PSU. Rule of thumb, when you buy new components, they're gonna fail in the first 30 days if they fail at all. After that, for good quality stuff, you'll find in most cases they last a very long time.

PS. I'd personally buy a corsair PSU. They're very nice Even if you did get one bad one. Get it repaired. Let us know if it fails too.

there is a problem with returning it however. Russian hardware dealers, dont like it when you return stuff. the will take it in for testing and 3 days later they will either give you the money back, trade it for a new PSU or refuse your warranty and make up a reason like saying the tests we ran showed that you were utilizing it imporoperly or something

I never had problem returning actually working hardware because it wasnt compatible or something. I hope this works out.

It is not really worth buying some high grade PSU's because they can die as quickly as a cheap one. Myself I own a very cheap LC 550w PSU and it handles my PC great.

I was under the impression that PC Power and Cooling made the highest quality PSU's, which is what I use. Although I thought Corsair was supposed to be high quality too, although maybe a bit more "mainstream". Maybe you just got the rare dud.

well i returned it but they told me because it was later than 2 weeks i cant really get a replacement instead they will just repair my broken one. if it broke within 2 weeks of purchase i could have got a replacement or money back. still feel kinda skeptical because i am not sure what fried it. i was turning it on and off very often before it fried (didnt even give a chance to unload the electricity before turning it back on) could that have been what broke it? such a high quality PSU should have protection against that kind of stuff.

Mine's made by Hiper, I believe my old one was too. Never had any problems.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

That's probably what broke it. Repairing it will be fine, just don't abuse it when you get it back Probably just a capacitor or two that blew.

In mother Russia, you don't return anything, Russia return you!

That's a rather dumb statement, hope you enjoy inconsistent and dirty power. Yes, they could fail within the first few days like cheap PSUs, but the point is they usually don't.

I don't know about Corsair being the best, I always think of them as a memory company, not power supplies. I've stuck with Antec for over 10 years and haven't seen any failures, and bought a SeaSonic(who makes Antec from what I've heard somewhere) a few years ago for my current system and couldn't be happier. Sure the 450w cost me $90 but I sleep better at night knowing its not a cheap $20 piece of junk.

And as Jerico said, that sounds like you broke it. If Corsair has a 5 year warranty, you couold just RMA it with them instead of trying to return it to the russian mob, i mean store.

As far I know (which ain't much about PSU's), lower end ones have a lot higher of a chance of frying all of your parts/even blowing up.

Pagan, it can take up to 4 weeks for the power to drain from a PSU. This is why you should never *ever* open one.

Once you let your computer wind down completely, it should be safe to turn it back on.

And like I said, the PSU may just have been a bad egg. Give corsair another try, they make pretty decent PSUs.

There are ways you can completely discharge the capacitors without waiting weeks for it to dissipate on its own.

There is a very easy way to discharge them, simply plug out your PSU then hold your start button for about 10 seconds, should empty it out.

Well after finishing school for computer technician I should know

And for those who say cheap PSU sucks, let me say my cheap LC 350w is now 5 years old and runs better than many new ones.

Yeah I've only had a problem with 1 of the 3 cheap power supplies I've bought in my life, the other 2 are still going after about 6 years I believe.

@charger

That might work if it's grounded, but I doubt it. You're more likely to simply electrocute yourself to death.

Here's a forum post I found on the subject. Please note. I recommend never opening a PSU (unless you're skilled to handle hazardous electronics). You're better off just replacing it. It's a lot cheaper than a hospital visit or worse
