Can you get a Peta,Exa,Zetta or Yotta byte on an average computer HDD drive space? Or is that on one of those super computer machines that need to hold ALOT of data?

If your computer has less than a megabyte of space, your computer must be zetta slow! (lame joke)

Well, 1 petabyte would (by standard conventions) be 1024 terabytes.
I suppose it is possible, but there's no such thing on the market today anyway, I'm sure.
Exabytes... yeah, not in the nearest future, and zetta... in your dreams

What could possibly demand so much space? And imagine the computer system that has to sift through the data ocean lol

Hmm, this needs some math:

A yottabyte is 1024^8*8=9671406556917033397649408 bits. = 9.671*10^24 bits.

On a modern HDD, the density of the bits are 5 atoms apart. The diameter of one atom (this is ridiculous, because every atom varies in size) is about 0.2nm.

sqrt(9.671*10^24 bits * 5 * 0.2nm) = 98'343.309m^2.

Diameter of the HDD = sqrt(98'343.309m^2 / pi)*2 = 11.1 km

Just for comparison, 11.1 km is approximately the diameter of earth.

Sooooo, no, this won't be happening...

Anyway, what on earth would you need that space for?

The earth is 11km? Cool.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

The earth is about ~13,000 km in diameter, FYI

I would like to live on a 11.1km wide yotta yacht.

Imagine the size of the power plant needed to power the motor that spins the disc?! I would imagine it would work better with a few extremely precise satellites to retrieve data from it somehow. That would be pretty neat. We could use the moon as a massive storage device. o_O

well, the moon is already in use by some aliens. That's what those "meteorite" craters are for

Something just hit me, what if the moon is our processor, it controls us through a program made by aliens. All our actions are hardcoded into the moon.

My plan: DESTROY THE MOON!

For heavens sake, NOO! Destroying the moon would be destroying our brains! We must begin operation "cheese on the moon"! The goal : Insert a USB cable into the moon so we can take control of our own lives.

Who's with me?

We need....The Chosen One. All we have to do is take the red pil ( or was it the blue one ) and escape the control by the aliens. Then operation Cheese the Moon can begin and the chosen one can insert the USB 3.0 cable into the moon.

I summon... KEITH.... to be the chosen one!

PS: Or mike....

That's just it; they WANT us to destroy it for some reason...

Perhaps they're tired of having to deal with us themselves, and so have recently updated their firmware to say "Hey! I'm Eddie, and I look forward to giving you guys that knowledge to go blow this moon up now guys, so go blow it up, because I'm Eddie and I told you to do it."

@CoughMist: you forgot the domain extension.
Here we go:

As you can see there is a rather slow response time, which is to be expected considering the distaance to the moon.

.org? haha.

I did .com before, but it wasn't as clever as just "moon" and nowhere near as clever as .org

There has to be some type of conspiracy going on here....

We need a safer system to hack into the moon. Here's what I could gather from the LINUX terminal:

There also seems to be a moon.de! Have the aliens created hostage servers to mislead us?

Right, Rudolpho! Analyze and report! Isocadia! Material inspection! CoffeeCoder! Recalculate vectors for USB 3.0 Cable insertion! Looks like these aliens are going down tonight!

I'm sorry, I've become busy for the weekend (curse those Aliens for it!) and thus do not have time to recalculate any vectors. Although, I can tell you that all you need to do is aim at the Dark side of the Moon, shoot the USB cable out of a cannon, and it should hit a crater that's shaped much like a USB port.

I love how we can turn a question such as the OP's into something like this.

I know

But wait... The aliens may WANT us to think that! That means that if it's the aliens thought, we are actually... *slap* *SHUT UP AND CLEAN UP YOUR ROOM!!*

Curse those aliens for disturbing my thoughts by sending in my mum...

EDIT : this is getting weird, let's talk about something else...

I have an idea. Suppose the Moon is the homeplanet for those nasty aliens who control our thoughts, right? Maybe we could launch a nuclear missile to the Moon to make it spin and make all those green aliens dizzy and dissorientated? Or launch a missile with laughing gas or do laxation powder in their drinks

Or perhaps it's not the moon, and none of this is real, and we're all just a simulation running on somebody's computer.

Maybe we are all just prerendered graphics to show off a new NVidia GTX 900 Billion in the future to show how fast it can render graphics.

This entire thing was probably rendered in about 3 seconds. I want that card.

Edit: The card was probably tested ON THE MOON!

Wait isn't IanM's base on the moon your hacking his network????? way to get banned.

as for what size HDD's we will get to, I remember the 10 MB HD we had in computer lab in school for the TRS-80's it was about 8 times the size of one of todays HD. and forget the size of the storage tape for the Data Generals we still had. Hardware keeps getting smaller and FF cut scenes keep getting bigger so who knows how much space we will need.
