Just thought I'd quickly throw out these tips since they've saved me a bit of cash over the last few days.

Mobile phone ...
I just got a new contract and new phone. Once you receive the phone, before you even open the box, phone back the company and tell them you've changed your mind and want to return it (you can since you've not completed the contract by opening the package). They offered me £20/month where previously it was £33. No haggling required.

Car Insurance ...
Renewal was £780. I did the usual and got a good quote from an Aggregator website (£610), but this had high excess etc. on it. Phoned up my insurance broker and got them to requote based on this. Got it down to £630. Still not enough. These guys take between £25 and £50 in commission for each transaction. I let them know I knew that, and asked for them to match the quote and tweak their commission. Got it for £600 in the end.

Bike Insurance ...
Legal cover normally costs £25. Whether you want it or not, is up to you. Renewed Bike insurance with the same company and asked them to remove my legal cover. They suggested it was sensible to leave it on. I said "I'll keep it for a fiver" and they said yes. £20 saved.

Just thought I'd share. We all know haggling is possible, but there are easy ways to do it. I think the phone one is the best. I've done it twice. Once you have the phone and contract set up, it's a waste for them if you cancel.

Maybe that will help someone save some pennies!

Insert piccy sig here. Eh? Why didn't that work?!?! Must ring help-a-noob. What was the number again? .... where am I?

I don't know about in the U.K., but here in the U.S. if we get a subsidized phone with a new contract, the contract is usually more expensive than just getting a new contract with your current phone.

I had Sprint cancel my contract over a 5 usd/mo extra charge they wanted to charge me. So sometimes it doesn't work But I was grateful, cuz I could no longer afford the phone and was able to cancel my contract at no cost to me.

its muche easier in russia, we have electronic payment terminal in every store and every corner and pretty much everywhere, just enter your phone number, insert the amount of money you want on your phone and youre happy. you can also use these terminals to pay for internet and pretty much everything

Here are some tips from me (not sure if it will work in other countries)

Dont pay for the public transportation if you can. I usually try to sneak in but the fact is nobody (not even the driver) cares if i dont pay or not. once in a while ill get a 5 dollar fine for that, but in the long run that comes out much cheaper than paying 1 dollar for the ride every time. (turns out about 5-10 bucks a day sometimes more)

haggle with the taxi drivers, also it would be good to have some familiar taxi drivers they usually give you a ride cheaper than others. i only use a taxi if its past 1 am and all the public transit is closed and i need to get home from work.

dont buy energy drinks, theyre very expensive vs a regular coca cola or fanta or mirinda or something. use a moped/ small motorcycle for pesonal transit because it wastes less gasoline. Also you can remake your car to run off propane gas tank, its much cheaper and its green... if you care about that stuff. Also dont be lazy, if you need to ride the bus a cople of stops, you dont need to pay, alk the distance instead, its great exersize and it savess money. i cant think of any more tips. i think my money saving tips are kinda retarted...

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

- Grow your own vegetables (some fruits are also possible; though with fruit trees; make sure you plant a few, so they can actually pollinate (you know; the whole "male/female" thing).

- Consider going to a farm that cuts their own beef/pork. Many times it's cheaper and much better quality. Buy in bulk and freeze the rest (use those sealer machines to keep longer).

- Do your own car/bike repairs. If you don't know how; there are plenty of books and online help. Even doing just simple repairs can save you lots of cash, especially in labor costs.

- When doing home repairs, or looking for some additional furniture; drive around your neighborhood to see if there's anything that can be used. A little elbow grease, some paint or sandpaper and stain; and you can have a nice new piece of furniture at little to no cost. Check out building supply companies for scraps that may be useful in smaller projects; they sell them off cheap to get rid of them.

- DO LESS EATING OUT!

- As Pagan mentioned; walk or bicycle when you can. Saves on gas; and future medical bills do to lack of exercise.

- Insulate your home well in the winter. It will save you a good amount of cash by running your heater less. In the cold months; leave your shades/blinders open, the sun will help heat that room during the day.

- Consider some herbal remedies. For burns; keep an Aloe plant in the house. It works better/faster than most "over the counter" remedies, it looks nice in your house, and it's cheaper. After getting a bad sunburn, spray the burned area with vinegar from a spray bottle. It smells bad, but takes the burn away fast.

- Do more reading, and less watching TV or computer activity. It saves on electricity, and you might learn something.

- Forget that expensive trip to that theme park. Head out to some National (or State) Parks; pack a picnic lunch (instead of buying food on the road), bring the dog and a frisbee with you (don't forget the family). Enjoy nature, and get some Vitamin D in the process (though not too much).

@Green Gandalf, you sort of took the joke I was going to use, but my punchline would have been distinctly more vulgar.

For most of these things, join up to http://www.quidco.com/. I have had £100 cashback for car insurance (no haggling required), spent £30 on the Grand National bets and got £50 cashback (yes, I really was £20 in credit before the horses set off), and have made exactly £593.83 savings in total.

How does it work? In a nutshell, you get the commission that the comparison sites / advertising sites normally get. The first £5 per year is the Quidco admin fee. If you don't save £5, you don't pay the admin fee. When you can save literally hundreds per year, it's a no-brainer.

More examples I've cashed in on -
RAC car cover for £9 after cashback
£5 for ordering a free SIM card that I never used
4% cashback every time I buy from play.com
£35 cashback on a PC World laptop that was already £150 off in the sale. It was bought in a shop, but cashback still possible online!
£90 cashback on home insurance

Drop your cable service.

Use hulu, netflix, skype (if you had phone service too), and over the air tv to supplement. Saves a *lot* of money!

You can also call your cable company to see if they'll offer you a lower rate.
