Remember those old guys? They made epic renders, I think one of them was called DaVinci, and all they used was MS Paint. Sometimes it's just skill....

it is much more clear and the sound seems to have more "range" or something. like i said it can also make stereo headphones become surround-sound capable--instead of just hearing music in my headphones it sounds like i'm sitting in a room full of speakers and with some adjusting i can get the bass to have more power (good for non-bass-boosted headphones like mine). i haven't really tried it out a lot in-game yet but i am looking forward to the experience.

I've been wanting a dedicated sound card for the longest, haven't been able to justify the cost. (since I have sound, getting this or that new gadget always seemed more important).

One day...

You just missed the $25 Newegg shell-shocker for an X-fi Xtreme Gamer.

I installed one for my brother, as well as bumping him up to surround speakers....and man did the combination make a HUGE difference. I'm still jealous of the stuff he had me install on/in his computer when we were still in the same house

I was surprised at the difference the sound card made, and I desperately want one for my system. I use headphones all the time, and with my system volume at the lowest possible setting, it's still crazy loud in some applications, and then ridiculously quiet in others. I've never had that problem with a computer before this one.

Sorry, but I have NEVER heard any difference in the Realtek AC97, and some high-fi sound. Maybe you have to be an expert in sound, but I'm perfectly fine with the sound card I've got, (the default AC97 which is in NEARLY every computer has by default), and I've never even had the desire to upgrade, but that's just me.

Enjoy your new sound card, though.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I've used the Live Platinum and now have the Audigy 2 ZS platinum. The SoundBlaster cards support 24-bit audio, while the AC97 is only 20-bit. Although, I just read the Intel HD audio that now comes on most motherboards supports 32-bit.

Crispix, if you can't hear the difference between the default AC97 to dedicated cards, it could be crummy speakers.

I use headphones most of the time, I hate using speakers. Regardless, it's probably just the headphones.

A sound card can only be as good as whatever's being used to hear the sound

For sound quality, yes. However, for 3D positioning the speaker\headphone quality doesn't matter so much.
