So i finally finished setting up my new rig. Got my crosshair 4 motherboard, 4 gigs of DDR3 (1600MHZ)a PhenomII x4 3.4ghz and a radeon HD5870 (1gig). installed win 7 64 bit, I was really exited to play GTA4 on full settings. At first the game seemes to run Perfectly on full settings at 40-60 fps but to my dissapointment. the game chugs every 2 seconds or so. Well ok i though its running on full settings, maybe my system is just not powerful enough. i kept turning down the settings untill i resorted to everything on absolute minimum. to my great frustration the game still chugs every 2-3 seconds, my ferst reaction was absolute rage since i spent tons of money on this computer. But deep inside i know its not my computers fault. anyone know why this is happening with the game? these chugs are completley ruining the whole gameplay experience

Sounds like something running in the background hogging your resources

Do you have a file indexing service running? (Like google desktop, or the one built into vista?) If GTA4 is making lots of files or something it could be that.

Also check memory and page file usage, that it is not having to page memory in and out every few seconds.

GTA4 is notorious for this. Make sure your graphics settings don't use more than your graphic card memory available.

Make sure you don't use that play recording "feature". It kills performance.

Make sure you try playing at higher resolutions. (sometimes it improves performance)

Make sure you've updated to the latest version of gta4. Make sure you have the latest drivers installed.

If that fails, check the steam forums for gta4 for more tips.

tried turning off the paging file, still chugs. turned everything to low or off exept for resolution and my graphics card is only using 200mb out of its 1 gig. I will now get the latest patch, and in terms of drivers, i have win7 64 and i am having troble finding the latest drivers that work on my system.

You know what's funny? Radeon 5850 can't handle GTA4 on High details,my 4770 can handle it on Very High with little lag.

GTA4 is probably my new all time favorite game, just so much to do I should get back to GTA modding.
