Hi all,
I just wanted to share my new toy. Right now it is a working, 4 player NFL Blitz 2000 Gold Cabinet.

The guy I bought it off of was having some problems with the monitor, so I got it really cheap. After messsing around with it for a couple of nights, I got the monitor working perfectly (at least for now). I'll probably have to repair it somewhere in the future.

In the future, I'll probably turn this into a Mame cabinet. Once I do that, I'll also be able to use it for games that I make in DBpro. That is what I am really looking forward to!

Anyone else into the arcade cab hobby?

Ron

That's awesome, Ron. I have never done it, but I have always wanted to take some plywood or OSB and make one with a cheap computer inside able to play some emulators.

Sweet deal!

I always wanted to buy one of the lite-gun games like Area 51, but could never justify the cost for something I wouldn't really use too much (also where would I put something that large).

More than $100, but less than $200.
Like I said, it was a good deal. I could part it out and get more than I paid. I'll probably do that once I convert it to Mame.

I thought about doing that too. But, for the cost, this was actually much more sensible. You can find old non-working cabinets for really cheap (sometimes free).

Right now it is in the garage. This winter it may go to the basement.
A light-gun game would be fun, but like you said, it would probably get boring quick then not used much. Then you are much more limited in options with what you can do with it.

dude, thats awesome! I have a similar hobby. You see i like really old antiqe stuff, so what i do is take something with an old exterior and build a modern system inside like i did with my ancient server case from 1989. it now has a crosshair 4 motherboard, a quadcore AMD 3,4ghz black edition, a 5870 in it. I wanna make a few more computers like this. Soon i am planning to make a stereo system inside of an ancient soviet radio. Its like this huge wooden box with a giant speaker (lightbulb transistors) and a record player on top of it. I am thinking something like these ones

but yeah you shold totally build something cool out of that arcade mashine!

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them

I've always wanted to build a cabinet and make a dashboard app with a selection of all my favorite games. It would be beautiful.

PAGAN,
Cool stuff. It would be fun to mod antique things to keep the "look", but have the modern capabilities.

It must have been completely new. You can get good working games for a couple hundred dollars. Check out craigslist in your area.

I bought 2 sinclair zx-81's off ebay. They are way more awesome than that arcade cabinet!

J/K

I so want to build an arcade cabinet at some point but its an expensive hobby to get into. You are very lucky to get such a good bargain wolf.

That's a pretty amazing toy, Ron! I wish I had enough room for some arcade cabinets.

Ron, where on earth in Pittsburgh did you find arcade games like this? You can barely find them anymore.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

I took some time and cleaned the cab. It must have been in a bar at one point. There were some cigarette burns in the plexiglass that covered the control panel. I took that off and it now looks like new. I also took all of the buttons out of the control panel, took them apart, then cleaned them really well. Lots of black gunk (I'm assuming cigarette tar) has been removed. It is now looking awesome and playing great!

It's a good thing we don't keep our cars in the garage

I know this is a dumb question, but what do you do for lives when you buy an arcade machine? I always wondered that, do you just keep the hatch where the money is dropped open and keep re-inserting the same coin?

No, DJ Almix, Every arcade machine comes with a slightly dodgy looking guy who comes round to your house and collects the money every Wednesday.

Nah, some of them have a button added to them that you press to add credit but you could probs leave the hatch open too

One game that I looked at had an extra button wired in that triggered adding a coin. This game has a "free play" mode. When this is enabled, you just hit the start button for each player and it acts like there are unlimited coins inserted. It does have a working coin mech though. I switched free play off and tested. Quarters are needed. Time to gather all the neighborhood kids

Cool. Make a 4 player Gauntlet game

Mate of mine has a Mame cabinet. Got it pretty much made off Ebay and just added an average computer. Works great, and even has 4 controllers which is cool. He also has those roller ball thingies for playing things like Ikari warriors. If I had the room I would so get one. Or more likely a car based one (4 player Sega Rally would be ace).

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

I made my cabinet about 6 years ago, and for the monitor it is just a 25" inch TV connected to the S-video output of the graphics card.

While the screen is crisp and looks authentic, if I were building it today I would get an authentic video game monitor, they sell them now that have VGA/DVI connectors especially for building MAME cabs, it's easier than ever now.

That Blitz cabinet should make a great MAME cab with it's layout. Normally the MAME community frowns upon destroying real classic arcade cabs for MAME purpose, in the name of preservation. But I don't think an NFL Blitz cab from 2000 fall into that category.

I agree. The layout will be great for a mame cab. That is one of the main reasons I bought it.
I'm torn with what to do with the monitor. This monitor is working ok now, but it won't be long before the problems get worse and I'm unable to fix it. If I get this one repaired, it will cost me $140 to send it away or about $60 if I do it myself. That isn't too bad, but... it is a 25" monitor that runs at 25hz and has "Medium" resolution. Most arcade monitors are lower resolution and 15hz. So, I don't think I could use the ArcadeVGA graphics card with this monitor anyway.
A new arcade monitor that has a little more flexibility would be about $400. That is a little more than I want to pay.
A used crt TV would work, but I might have to go smaller on the screen unless I remove it from it's case. I'm not sure I want to get into that.
Old PC crt monitors are too small.
New TV's are all LCDs and all widescreen format. That won't work nicely either!
I think my best option is to keep watching for a cheap, used 25" tv with a S-video port (just like you have). I just have to find one that is less than 25" wide.

That is so awesome! I'd love to build myself a MAME cabinet but I have no tool skills for making a cabinet. I have to resort to either finding an old one like you or buying a cabinet specifically for MAME.

If I were you I'd also put emulators for all the old consoles as well. Great find

Mine is still in progress, although I do have my joysticks and buttons mounted, just a pain to find 3/4" MDF for the sides.

I'm making a custom front end, like add a room, then add arcade machines to it, scroll through them as 3D models with marquees and everything, and press fire to start it up. Works and looks great. I'm adding emulators, but actually making models, so you'd scroll to the right to play a mame game, but scroll to the left and you get speccy, C64, SNES etc - only made the speccy model so far but it looks great. Next I'm adding a jukebox, to play MP3's . What I'm thinking is that people can make their own arcade room with their favorite games, and I'll have the flyers act as posters and stuff, showing random games.

Building from scratch is not too difficult, as long as you can cut a decent line - MDF is good because jigsaws leave a neat edge, neater than chip board or even real wood. I have everything I need except the wood for the sides, once they are gotten and cut it'll fly together.

Since buidling the joystick box and hooking it up, I've completed about 50 arcade classics, only 4500 odd to go!.
