This is a mech model I have been working on. It's still a work in progress and I want to know what people think.

I think the feet are way too heavy. Other than that, nice start for a mech model.

I'd suggest thinking about whether you want to add arms to it or not. I personally 100% prefer mechs with arms and weapons (railguns mostly) as hands. Although that's a bit stereotype, it's the only believable form of mechs I've seen in games so far. Only exception is the AT-ST mech from StarWars which looks perfect without arms.

To cut it short: Add arms to it, please

Good work so far.

@Azunaki - I have been on these forums a long time ago. Since it's summer time and don't have a job, I've gone back to programming and 3d modeling. I think it's been almost 2 years since I posted something on this forum.

@D0MINIK - Hmm... I'm still deciding about the arms. The reason why the feet are larger is to give it better "balance" since it has no arms. I don't know that giving it arms would suit the game I am making in the best way... But I'm still thiking about it.

the way you shaped the model arms would appear as an after thought. are there going to be different strengths of mechs(like they get stronger harder and more agile as the game progress) if so i think that model should be left as is and later models should gain arms, hands, fingers ect.

@Azunaki - Eventhough that's a great idea, I'm making a relatively simple game and wasn't planning on adding upgrades to the mech. So does this mean that it would need more armor?

what i meant is not upgrades but different mechs that were different powers. say the first of 3-5 is that one and then you slowly add more to the mechs. as the next one has arms. but any way its your game.

I changed the joint under the cockpit/head area to something that would work better for rotating it via limbs during gameplay.

looks good, although you may want to increase the slant on the cockpit a bit.

I started to texture it, but not quite sure I'm satisfied with it so far. Anyway here's what I got.

i don't like that you made the edges so harsh. it would be better as a more simple scratch then a solid line.(add some inconsistency to the line and make it a little less apparent.

Does this look any better? I improved the edges and added a little more detail to the gun barrel(I hope it's visible). The next step is rigging it for animation

this should help you a bit. your adding lines for were the metal was bent which isn't "bad", but you need to make the lines smaller the lines in the pic i are small the bench thing is about the size of a regular bench. the lines should appear very small. you should see them but they shouldn't be taking from the model but adding to it; accenting what is already there, but they are starting to look better. and they should only be there were the metal would be bent to fit the model.

@Azunaki - In your picture the edges look even and straight. In your previous post you said that they should be more inconsistant and like a scratch. So should I do more of a clean look, or a scratchy look?
By the way, this is my first texture ever.

I think I got the texture right this time . It took a bunch of subtle changes, but I think it looks better. I also added even more detail to the barrel (I dont know if it shows up well with this picture, again). I'm also going to start animating it.

I think it looks much better. Good job! Glad to see that you are working this all the way through.

yea the reason i said inconsistent is because the wear and tear that would be on the mech which isn't shown on the picture i showed. and yes it looks much better.

I have the rigging and animation done for my model. What should I use to record it to show everyone?

well what program are you using? you could render the video out. although additionally you could use camstudio, and then just upload it to youtube or a similar site.

OK. I got the video up on YouTube. Keep in mind that this is my first animation and it's only a walking animation because I'm creating a game and that's all I need

i really hate 4 sec long videos on youtube, you could run it through like a lot of time so we can really study it istead of like 2 times.

looks pretty solid though, good job =)

Here's a longer video. Sorry for posting such a short video before. This one is in DBPro because I could loop the animation smoothly.

Looking quite nice now, for a little bit of realism, try tilting the chassie on each step. Itll add a greater sense of movement since it shows the mech counterbalancing itself with say? every other step?

That and itll look pertty cool aswell lol.

YEah right now there is no sense of weight in the movement, a mech would require a slow and steady movement, with good hinges and the large weight of the chassis bobs up and down.

The quality is quite well commerical on that model but you can see the bounce in each of its steps.

I like the way it sort of bounds with each step, it'd be great to add a slight jarring bump every time the mech takes a step...

I added a sort of bounce to body when the mech's feet hit the floor. Does this look better? Is it too subtle?

Looking better, but make the main cockpit tilt slightly on the forward axis, and it'll look more natural...

Third time's a charm
It looks a lot better now with the tilting of the cockpit for each step.

Yeh, that's looking much better and more natural now - can't really think of any additional crit to give the walking loop now...

I thank everyone that critiqued me. I worked really hard to make it look good (It's took over 2 weeks to do) and I learned a lot. Everyone was nothing but help .

Edit: Wow, this thread made it to the second page.
