Is there a way to run DBC or DBP on Linux? I am using puredyne which is based on Ubuntu if that helps.
I only just converted to linux and I am genuinely shocked that DarkBasic of all things isn't cross platform. It's the only thing I really want to bring with me from windows.

I did search for DBC on linux but I couldn't find any answers.

I only own an upgrade version of windows XP and I don't have the win98 disk any more so I can't get XP back on and I'm not going to buy a copy just to use DBC. If there is no work around I'll have to leave DB for ever

Can you save me?

DBP and DBC in linux isn't easily possible from what I last heard on the subject. Perhaps it's time to switch to purebasic

I actually DO have a suggestion... But it requires a really fast computer with a lot of RAM. You could run windows inside LINUX in a virtual box : http://www.virtualbox.org/

They even have a seamless mode where you can use windows and LINUX at the same time.

This would work if linux has proper 3d driver support for virtualbox, or if virtualbox supports 3d acceleration in linux. (not sure off hand which one it is)

Last I tried I think it didn't, but that was a quite a while ago and I may have been using a different vm.

If I remember rightly the newer VMWare stuff allows it to emulate a half(ish) decent graphics card. I think an S3 or something. It's enough to get by on, as I used to use it to run XP (or was it 98?...) for old DIV stuff, and XP to test out DBP stuff still worked on older machines. Worked ok (as in didn't crash with DirectX error) but I doubt will be too fast. Mine was all low impact 2D stuff. Also was on a Windows box, but may have the same functionality now for Linux.

Cheers

I am 99% probably lying in bed right now... so don't blame me for crappy typing

Nope, with wine the game only works if you don't use 3D, but just sprites. I know I'm trying to get some old DarkGDK projects to work and they don't. Wine is great, but I can't understand why DBPro/DarKGDK projects don't work.
Also, if you check the wine app database you will see that DBPro is marked as 'garbage', meaning almost nothing works besides the IDE. The games... a big no no.

Why? When was the last time you used DirectX on Linux?...

I think it's probably more the fact every other 'easy'/rapid game dev tool in existence is cross platform (e.g. Blitz, Unity, Garage Games' stuff, PureBasic etc.). TGC is lagging behind in this respect

Heck even Source and Unreal are cross platform now

Don't all of those use OpenGL? That's a lot of work to make a graphics API work with both DirectX and OpenGL. Just because others do it, doesn't mean it's even economically feasible. If there's an economical reason for doing so, I'm sure TGC would do it
