I was digging through the steam game store the other day, and I stumbled upon blue-shift (my favourite of the 3). To cut a long story short, my social life then dissapeared for the last few days as I re-visited one the the main games involved in my memories of childhood and growing up. Sure, the graphics aren't the best (although the HD pack makes them better), and it doesn't do anything new. But MY GOD is it consuming! The way you are sucked into the storyline is a trait that few games today manage to create. So basically, I'm interested to hear your views on the the original half life/HL expansions during the current period of gaming..and if you still find it as consuming today as you did all those years ago.

Feel free to add me on Steam:

I haven't yet completed the two Gearbox Half-Life spin-offs, but it will no doubt get done eventually. Also, Blue Shift seems to be the least popular of the 3 games among most people.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

I loved the original Half-Life and its spin-offs/expansions. I actually much prefer the original three to Half-Life 2 and the episodes.

Sadly my only experience with Half-Life is the Orange Box. BUT I hope to change that soon.

And expect a friend request from me soon.

Half life is AMAZING! Although i've played through the whole series many times, I always find myself coming back to HL1. The boss battle was extremely satisfying...the one time I got into the Nihilanth's head and crowbarred him to death...i never did figure out how to do that again. None of the other half life games have anything that compares to that boss.

Opposing Force. I loved that game way more than CoD Mod 2, or anything I've played recently...

Blue Shift was good, but too short IMO...

Half life 1 and Opposing force ( and Duke 3d ) are my all time favourite games on the PC. I never really cared that much for Blue-Shift.

Only part was fighting the Black Ops in the train tunnel, the only time an FPS has really pushed my ability in a long time, it was horrible...

The rest was great, and the weapons were genius design, <3 the LMG...

I actually only recently played the Half Life games. I played Half Life: Source, Half Life 2, and the episodes. I didn't like the first one enough to justify playing Opposing Force or Blue Shift, but the second one and the episodes are absolutely awesome. My favorite is probably Episode 2. That last fight (where you had to shoot the Magnasomething devices at the striders) was one of the coolest fights in any video game ever. I also played Portal when it was out for free that one time, if it can be called a Half Life game.

I remeber this game, still have the original disc version. I don't think I ever got very far, I must admit I much prefer Half Life 2 and it's episodes to the originals. BTW I added you all on steam.

I played Opposing Force now, almost finished it and I started thinking...damn...this is one of the best FPS games ever made, with some bugs fixed and maybe ragdoll added and more guns it would be the best game ever.

I finished the original Half-Life and Blue Shift back using the retail versions before I had Steam (not even sure if it existed yet!). I had Opposing Force as well but didn't beat it and when I transferred everything to Steam and switched computers I lost my progress. Certainly seems longer than Blue Shift, but it might just be that I've had to restart.

@charger bandit - You sort of get those improvements with Half-Life: Source, which I got while it was on sale awhile ago. You don't get the expansion packs sadly, but it's more or less the original game with a few shader improvements and some minor use of physics. If I recall it has a bit of a different feel to it as well, and you get other upgrades as far as visuals and sound thanks to the Source engine.

I've never completed a Half Life game!
I've started the first, second and I think episode one but I never got through them.

But I do love them. They are incredibly atmospheric, I just haven't got into the story yet.

I haven't completed the first Half-Life properly. I've done Half-Life 2 and the first two episodes, up until the end of EP2 where I just got annoyed at the strider part and gave up when they told me they'd come from everywhere.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

Does it actually matter? The only reason I haven't got into Half Life 2, is that I don't want to miss out on the story.

Does it matter in terms of story if you don't complete the first?

Not really BiggAdd, they fill you in with the basics of what happened but it isn't imperative to know everything. There are a few little hints in the dialogue and scenery about what happened before but these are mainly little Easter eggs for the fans. I'd still recommend playing the first though, if only to see what the fuss is about.

Well, I was the same. When I completed Half-Life it was done with cheats, purely because I was only interested in the story at the time. But the only thing in HL2 that is explained in HL1 is where the jumping headhumpers came from and why there's a weird bloke talking to you at the start.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

Half Life and it's expansions are definately one of the hardest games I played in my life. Half Life 2 and episodes aren't that challenging, except those striders in Ep2.

Still haven't finished OF,then gotta eat up BS

I really liked Blue Shift, was a very well balanced game, challenging, good weapons (esp the support machine gun), and great for playing after Half Life. Shame they didn't do a sequel with Half Life 2 - I mean they could have a resistance storyline, you playing the guy on the 'inside' helping the civilians undercover.

Or we could always make one ourselves. Group up the talents from TGC and make an awesome Opposing Force sequel in Source engine

But then there would be two opposing force sequels in the Source engine. Anyway, where would we find a willing C++ coder at TGC?

Yeah, that part. I got annoyed there, I died multiple times and spent many hours on my computer to get trought it, but damn it was hard. I almost went to the stage where I'm going to open console and put god mode on, but I finally got trough it. And achieving that was great! I hate the hard parts wich seem impossible at the moment, but after beating them, it feels awesome as hell!

I completed HL2 on PC 3 times, XBox once and 360 once. Completed op forces, blue shift, and all the HL2 episodes once on PC and 360. Completed HL on PS2 (co-op mode is not easy but good fun). I even completed the DreamCast version of HL, although it is only like 1/5th complete it would have been great.

I think though, I'm getting confused between Blue Shift and Opposing forces - maybe Blue Shift was so short that I don't remember much, I remember Opposing Forces now, with that great support gun, finished with you killing some alien after pressing buttons at each side of this room. What happend in Blue Shift?, was that the one where you mostly just have to work out how to open doors?

I am stuck in Blue Shift. It is the part where you take the elevator down to activate the power. I opened the coolant and filled the room and did everything so the power meter almost got to the end but when I go back up the doctor says it is not enough and I must go back. What shall I do?

EDIT: Solved it,just had to press a switch to bring the huge bridge up and charge the battery. Completed the game.

Damn what now? I guess I gotta go play a mod.

EDIT n.2: If you own HL,you MUST!!! try THIS mod, extremly awesome.

Half-Life: 2 times. Opposing Force: 4 times. Blue Shift: 0 times. Half-Life 2: 6 to 7 times. Episode 1: 3 times. Episode 2: 4 times. Portal: Didn't count, too mich times.
But altho you aren't a true nerd unless you have played HL or HL2 atleast once in your life, it doesen't stop there. I played AvP2 multiple times, Jericho... well playing the first time, F.E.A.R I played 2 times, Dead Space, playing for the first time, I have about 10 PSP games I play alot (mainly the 2 Silent Hills and LocoRoco + Killzone) and I even have PlayStation 2, wich I use for Shadow of the Colossus and alot more games. And I also use FPSC alot in a day, and hang around on the forums + watch tons of movies. I may sound lifeless, but... well I am.*

*Joke, I do alot more stuff in a day than those. But those are true thou. I also go Parkour sometimes, school, walking the dog, out with my friends and bla bla... so beat it nerds.

Cool. I've been playing HL1 recently... on the Dreamcast!

I always wanted the game as it looked so cool when they gave out videos to magazines etc but I thought it was never released because it just wasn't finished... turns out the game was fully completed ("Gold") for the DC but just never got released.

It's a pretty good port too, only issue is saving to the VMU, near the end of levels save sizes balloon, so you really need either a blank VMU or large 3rd part VMU to play it properly. Also, the DC KB & Mouse work great too!

Makes me want to get HL:Source for Steam now & play all the expansions...

I loved all 3 original half life games, but the first one is still the best IMO. I remember really being into the HL deathmatch mode, especially the map where you could kill other players by flooding a room.
