I'm in a ranting mood. Time to rant.

These are the most overused words (that I always here):

1. Surreal. Every reality show, every time something good happens, this is all you hear, "Oh my God, it's so surreal!"

2. Nostalgia. This is a newer overused one. Enough said.

3. lol. An overused, and rundown word and expression.

4. Raped. This is a terrible one to use. Ask anyone who has ever gone through this situation, not so funny to them.

5. Owned. Overused, annoying, and generally I want to shoot anyone in the face who uses it.

6. Fail. This one, has been overused for the past 3 years.

7. That's gonna hurt in the morning! Talk about a cliched overused saying.

8. Say hello to my little friend! Again, overused. Disney can be accredited for destroying a lot of these sayings.

9. That's what she said! Really? She also told me this saying isn't funny.

10. HURR. No comment needed.

11. Derp. This one is overused, mainly on the darker areas of the internet (4chan, Encyclopedia Dramatica, etc.).

12. +[Number] Internets. Seriously? This is what people think is funny now? First it started with cookies, and now this?

13. The cake is a lie! Portal was fun, yes, but let's not go overboard.

Feel perfectly free to contribute.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Lol, nostalgia isn't overused. Just cos you see something a lot doesn't mske it overused, most of the time it's in a genuine nostalgia thread.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

It's overused. For the past few months all you see on forums is, "nostalgia" this, "nostalgia" that.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

Again, just because lots of people are getting happy memories doesn't mean the term is overused.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.

Never heard someone say 'nostalgia' so I disagree on that one.

I don't even know what +[number] internets means lol.
I agree with most on your list, however I am immature and perverted so "that's what she said" always makes me laugh.

"Lol" is used a ridiculous amount but I refuse to agree that it is "over-used." That would be like saying the word "the" is overused.

Signature's are stupid.

Welcome to the evolution of language. You can't stop it. I bet people 20 years ago were starting to talk about how things aren't literally 'cool'.

The words "Overrated" and "Underrated" is pretty overused..

just because a lot of people likes an game/movie/book/whatever or dislikes it it doesnt mean it is overrated or underrated, people are allowed to have thoughts doesnt they?
a lot of people seem to think if a lot of people acually likes something it is overrated..

Man, a couple days ago I was thinking about some words that kind of sound smart, and people use to sound smart, but they end up seeming repetitive and aren't really that intelligent - can't remember an example tho >.>

I don't quite understand what makes you think that, but ok.

It's not so much happy memories that I hate, it's the word "nostalgia" that is terrible. It just sounds so cheesy and annoying.

mmh and lol has probably been used as long as ive lived, heck my mom used it when she was young, what is wrong with that? so you mean i sould stop using shorties like TBH, WTF, WTH, ASO aswell?

Quote: "Raped. This is a terrible one to use. Ask anyone who has ever gone through this situation, not so funny to them."

yes sure, you have a small point here but seriously, i do not think they care as much as you make it sound, since we are in fact just not serious when we say: "haha he just got raped" i mean, raped mean in that case owned or something like it and i think that the ones who acually have been raped should have understanding for that.

Quote: "Owned. Overused, annoying, and generally I want to shoot anyone in the face who uses it."

Owned.
no but seriously i say owned a lot of times and i never get annoyed with it, I personally think you are the ONLY one i've ever seen getting annoyed with it...
Owned.
Quote: "Fail. This one, has been overused for the past 3 years."

3 years... lemme count...
1...2...3...4...5
and i believe it was used before that aswell.
You Fail'd
no, i do not think this one is overused just yet, however not even closely as funny as it was when i first started with it, but a good way to express that someone acually FAILED.

I totally agree with puppyofkosh. I cannot stand it when people say something is "gay". I also agree with "rap(ed)", "owned", "lol", "that's what she said", and "fail" (although it can be funny when used properly). That's about it though. The rest I'm not sure on why they appear to irk you...

I think the word 'rant' is overused...

'Gay' is in the same book as 'retarded' for me. "That is soooo retarded."

lol is definitely annoying. I prefer to use 'hahaha.' It seems that nowadays people tend to use it as a response instead of a gesture of expression, and even when it is used "correctly" it can still be a little overkill. Sometimes, when I am reading a person's headline on facebook and it is something along the lines of "lol. i just dropped the remote control. lol!" I actually picture how ridiculous it would be to actually hear them verbalize and laugh like that in a real life situation.

Quote: "2. Nostalgia. This is a newer overused one. Enough said."

I can't really see that as being overused, but I do find the way you worded it kind of funny.

I HATE when people ask me if I want a cookie, or if they ask anyone else for that matter.

I do say gay a lot though. I don't see why people get mad about people saying gay though.

I don't think it is so much about getting mad at hearing someone say someone or something is gay, it is more that the term is being used in a negative way or as an insult. If a person thinks 'gay' is an insult, what should I think of the person saying it? Should I just assume that the person is using it because of habit, or is there possibly some underlying, subconscious animosity towards homosexuals being expressed vicariously through terminology?

Plus, I also think it is silly that the word 'gay' has evolved in the way it has.

"A gay person is fun to be with because they are lively and cheerful. ", "I am happy and free, in good health, gay and cheerful.", and "A gay object is brightly coloured and pretty to look at. " is how it should be in my eyes.

The word gay has been replaced. Really, I remember having this discussion with my primary school teacher 30 years ago, about how they remember the meaning of the word. After 40-50 years, the initial meaning of gay is irrelevant and practically forgotten. Frankly though, who cares, I think gay is a much better word than homosexual - it's all in the context, to me gay is less of a label that whateversexual. I find political correctness is just a convenient labelling system, like Dymo, only far less useful. I remember a character in Coronation St in a wheelchair referred to themselves as a rasperry! (cockney rhyming slang for cripple). Political correctness has only succeeded in making our TV less funny.

And at times it's daft, non-specific and damaging when taken to levels of stupidity. Some turn around and say, "I'm not visually impaired, I'm blind." There was a cinema that basically allowed visually impaired people in for free, personally, I find that sweet, because my left eye is weaker than my right, so technically that makes me visually impaired. I'm sure they meant, blind people get in for free. From what I understand, blind people find it patronising, note charities don't name themselves, "Association for the visually impaired". When I told my photosensitive epileptic friend that the term 'brainstorm' is no longer used because it is offensive to epileptics she almost had a fit. (Sorry for the pun) To which I said, as an arachnophobic surely 'spider diagram' is equally as offensive?

However, these overused phrases, I don't find them all that irritating, sometimes a cliched phrase can be entertaining so long as you're being an idiot about it. One we use a lot is 'your face' and all it leads into is a mock argument over 'your face', sure it's silly, but then why be sensible all of the time? Some of these phrases are just a part of banter...at the end of the day speech is horribly cliched (again, sorry for the pun).

I also find "To be completely honest" a silly phrase. What? Have you not been completely honest with me until now?

Quote: "I find political correctness is just a convenient labelling system"
Quote: "And at times it's daft, non-specific and damaging when taken to levels of stupidity. Some turn around and say, "I'm not visually impaired, I'm blind.""

George Carlin has some pretty great stuff to say about 'soft language.'

Quote: "We have no more deaf people in this country. Hearing impaired. No more blind people. Partially sighted or visually impaired. No more stupid people, everyone has a learning disorder. Or he's minimally exceptional. How would you like to be told that about your child? 'He's minimally exceptional.' Psychologists have actually started calling ugly people those with severe appearance deficits. It's getting so bad that any day now I expect to hear a rape victim referred to as an unwilling sperm recipient!"

I agree with you chaps, but I also think that a person should be careful with how they use language in context. I don't think anyone that calls someone a 'retarded homo' is likely to say the same thing in a room full of gays or 'mentally challenged' folks. So why even say it to begin with?

To be fair, if you call someone retarded, it's not insulting to people who are mentally damaged - it just literally means 'slow'. If you tell me I shouldn't call people retards because that's insulting to mentally disabled people, then you're the one who thinks they're retarded

Nah, I don't really think of it that way. I don't look at the person or thing being called 'retarded', I look at the person saying it and wonder why they would let their demeanor be tarnished with that kind of language. It only expresses to me a lack of empathy on your part.

I have to agree with the term "gay" as an insult. It really annoys me, no matter your view on whether or not it's right it has caused a lot of discourse in families.

Anyway, on topic, I think that "That's gonna hurt in the morning!" is overused, but not anymore. Honestly I haven't heard that in a while.

But yeah, stuff like fail and lol are funny on the internet, but in real life they just make someone seem stupid and annoying. Usually because they are. I only do that around my brother, because we're awesome like that. Around anyone else I hold myself to a higher degree.

To me, its nothing more than a two-meaning word.

1st Meaning - Stupid/Dumb/Something around those.
2nd Meaning - A Homosexual.

Now by saying that something is gay, I just mean its stupid. I am not trying to relate it to homosexuals in anyway. So I just really don't see how its an insult. Thats like me saying "uhh, you just used the word 'caused', I take that as an insult."

It's pejoration of a word, dependent on usage, you might see the two words merge together, that is, if homophobics take the word 'gay' and continue to use it in a negative context, but them homosexuals have done the sensible thing and claim the word, so anybody can say they're gay and they'll can say, "what else is new?" Hence homophobics choose to use the word 'fag' instead.

In the separate context, "that's gay", I can see why people might think it's offensive to homosexuals, but I've never seen it to have a damaging effect.
