Yup, you heard that right. So long as you are a student Autodesk are releasing a shedload of their programs for free use to students in 13 month trials. I just downloaded 3DS Max myself, here's the link:

They let me download it and technically I don't attend it anymore - I just used my school E-mail address...

They're all gits. I tried to register, and they told me my email wasn't valid. Then it says 'allow three days for email verification'. Two weeks later and not a freaking thing. My PURCHASED copy of 3DS is now out of date, and I can't use it, and now that this is free, no reseller will let me purchase it. So I have no 3D software except Blender.

Yeah, it sucks to be me.

I was about to get pissed off about the fact i've just upgraded to 2011, but then i realised that i can't make any money from the student version anyway, nevermind, i'm sure i'll have a mess around with some of the other products they have on offer.

Yeah, I DLed 3ds Max, Mudbox and Sketchbook Pro a while back. Seems like a great idea to get you into the industry or whatever. More students that know 3ds Max or Maya = More sells when it comes to them getting jobs and working at larger companies.

I don't get it,whats the point in new releases if even Max 7 does the job. I have 2008 version, has great plugin support and I will stick to it.

To play the devils advocate, who would know?
Actually as a serious question, they must use some way to track the media but who would go as far to check?

And i agree with quik

How can a purchased copy go out of date? Thats just stupid.

Also, my school doesnt use a .sch .edu email address so i cant do it either! Plus my school would just complain if i did it anyways and say im trying to get them to buy me something... idiots!

As far as I know, when you save a file with 3ds max, it changes a few of the vertex positions by a very, very, small amount and it can be loaded into an app by autodesk to see if if fits some sort of mathematical criteria.

Like Quik said, it has more functions, and is probably more stable and less likely to crash. I know Oolite pointed out a couple cool functions in the later versions in the 3ds Max Help thread. I've got a stand alone license for 3dsmax 8, and for it just being a hobby for me, I don't tend to upgrade any time soon. If I do at some point, however, my wife is a teacher and I might see what we can do with that.

The epic piracy rates of their products suggests you're not alone in thinking that

Here's my standing on buying new copies. Now, 2011 is definitely worth the upgrade because of the massive amount of features in it and the general stability in it. You may ask, what's the point of upgrading? But all of these tools make completing work a lot quicker than before, which is great if you have multiple clients and need to push out work quicker. If you're just doing your own projects and working to your own deadline its fine to stay 4 years out of date, but if you are getting paid for the work you are doing then you really need to get it done as quickly as possible, whilst maintaining a high standard of work. All these new tools help to do that. When freelance is at its best, you can easily justify the cost of the upgrade within a few jobs. If you're a hobbyist or an indi developer, it's almost always a case of "deal with what you've got."

so let me get this straight you pay 5000 for 3ds then a year or 2 the licence ends and i am guessing the program get deactivated, so you have to pay 5000 more for a newer version?

You can buy a full license like I did and have it working forever (well, atleast until it breaks or no longer works on Windows 536 Enterprise Professional Ultimate).

Honestly, I think Autodesk software is HIGHLY overrated.

I see people on here turn out more quality work with programs like Milkshape than those who buy (or pirate) Audodesk software.

I just now realized I've had a typo in my signature for the past 3 years.

yeah, pulling of a nice lowpoly character is just as much possible in MS3d as in 3ds max

however
it takes a lot more time considering MS3d is all tris, no edge cutting functions, no selecting edge loops, nothing like that.

you have a poly limit at 10k.
3ds max has a poly limit at gods know what, ive been around 300k+ anyhow

I beg to differ, here maybe, but across the internet there's much more 3DS art around than Milkshape art...

I can't use low-poly. I have UDK, low-poly looks terrible in it.

it all depends on the texture, normal mapping, specular mapping, how the model is built.

just because it is low poly doesnt mean it has to look bad
