Hello, I'll just get straight to the problem.

I need a wireless router and adapter that provides a consistent signal and good speed from one end of my house to the next and goes through several walls, a TV, and a microwave.

I started out just using a cheap Wireless G router and adapter that I already had. The best signal strength I got from it was two bars maximum. Most of the time it just hovered around "very low." I also noticed it would frequently drop in speed any time I was downloading something or if someone was using the main computer that was wired to the router.

Then, I moved my computer (with the adapter) into my room and updated my router and adapter to a Belkin wireless N + N300. When I first got it up and running signal was great, but when I finished set up, the signal strength plummeted to "low" and last night quit recognizing the router all together.

It should also be noted that I primarily use the computer with the wireless adapter for gaming and that's why I need something a little more consistent. I can browse fine, but it gets frustrating when I constantly have to log in and out of an online game I'm trying to play.

Does anyone with a little experience with wireless have any suggestions? Money is not an issue if you want to suggest a better product.

Uh. . . What?!

If you're an online gamer and your computer isn't situated moderately close to the router, I'd strongly suggest using a LAN cable instead. It's just far more smooth and reliable.

@ Benjamin

I would really like to do that, but I'm actually just a kid living in my parents' house. There IS, however a phone jack in my room near my computer.

What do I need to buy in order to get wired internet in that room? If I just buy a DSL modem, would that work? Or is that gonna cost extra with our ISP?

Uh. . . What?!

Couldn't you just run the router from your own phone jack in the room?

You might also look into a wireless signal booster. The last office I worked at had one. We had two separate buildings, split by a small parking lot. The building that didn't have hardly any signal to begin with skyrocketed when we put this in. I also did a quick search on google and found a few cheap or free ways of doing it as well. Good luck!

I would suggest trying to convince your parents to run a cable to wherever you are - it'll probably a lot less painful than searching for and buying a wireless adapter, to have it maybe fail (I've never had good luck with wireless adapters X_X)

You can pick up a long LAN cable for pretty cheap, and if it's not long enough buy a coupler to join two (this is what I did since I'm all the way over the other side of the house). Put it this way, your parents are paying for the connection and it's not really being used to its full potential. I'm sure they'll understand and buy you the cables.

Of course, I don't know how big your place is, so it may be a massive distance that would require trailing the cable around many walls and corners...

ehhhh, I dont know about running a long cable to my room. I'd have to drill holes and run through the attic. It's clear on the other end of the house.

Signal booster huh? Does that just refresh the signal and act sort of like a mimic router? I'll have to look into that.

Simpler still, could I just buy a DSL modem and use the phone jack in my room or would that cost extra money to our ISP or tie up the phone line?

Uh. . . What?!

you should never go through a microwave to connect to the Internet, thats a big nono.
You can run the router from your bed room, that might be the best shot.

But if all else fails just blame your goverment. (ima sig that...)

Thanks for all the input

Just get a nice long RJ45 cable, and run it under the carpets/along the walls. If that's so difficult, just put it above the floor with some industrial black/silver tape on top.

I'd love to see things from your point of view but I can't get my head that far up my bum.
