This is my very first OK model

The areas circled I need to get smaller, like downsize them but only that area! its all one object by the way.
I seen one guy use a paintbrush like thing to choose the faces faster
than clicking every one, as its one of my first models it had a lot of faces.
This is a video of what im looking to do here, the thing im talking about is from about 1.37-1.40. Its like a circle thing that he uses, its a sped up video so I cant tell what he did, please help!
The video link:

Thanks everybody, will check tomorrow!

EDIT:
solved, this is my finished model, I think its ok for my 2nd model every complete, my first being blocky, untextured. Thanks link102!

I'm not sure what that selection tool is called, but you get it by pressing b twice in edit mode.
Personally I use the first b tool the most.

And about the modeling, keep watching tutorials, reading books and doodeling around and you'll get the hang of it.

edit: note that the ak47 in the video has a square barrel, that's a bad thing.
