Quik its hardly stupid if he was not using the computer, and there was no viruses found, he used his common sense, he would have to switch it off some time any way.

Definitely not possible without the youtube account hacked(Which would be extremely hard in this case), but be aware that I know of a virus that looks like a Youtube link but are a link to a virus. Usually shared on Facebook but can be distributed anywhere thats probably how you got it.

It's usually a good idea to check the link itself not just the displayed text which can be anything, for example, I doubt this will give you a virus

Basically it is impossible to get a virus by just opening a Youtube page. Either your antivirus is really horrible to find any website script malware or you clicked something else there.

I guess you were that lucky that some virus showed up right at the time when you opened Youtube.

You can't get a virus just by opening a web-page unless you're using a very old version of IE, or have disabled all the security options in IE.

What is more likely is that youtube had nothing to do with it. You already had the virus and AVG happened to come across it at the time you were watching the video. When AVG tried to remove it, it triggered the virus.

In fact, the virus had probably got itself into the boot-up sequence already, pretending to be a core component of windows. When AVG removed it, it removed part of the boot-up sequence, and so now you can't boot up

I was extremely frustrated to find recently that sometimes this isn't true. I was browsing a harmless website a couple months ago (something similar to Gizmodo but I don't remember), but it apparently was hijacked because I managed to get a virus. In Firefox. Apparently it used a Java web plugin exploit and I had to reformat my machine.

Java is long disabled now.
